For many, living, working and traveling in a van — also known as van life — is the dream. It is a flexible lifestyle in which people can balance both their work and desire to travel.

This lifestyle has risen in popularity in recent years. In 2020, sales of Mercedes-Benz vans, a popular vehicle choice among many, increased by 22.5 percent in the U.S. as people decided to escape quarantine by road tripping.

Now that more companies are allowing employees to work entirely remotely, being a tech professional from the road is a much more feasible option. Deel, a remote employee management and payroll company, is offering a unique van life job for content creators looking to travel. The company announced Tuesday it is now accepting applications for its “Dream Job Down Under” social media nomad position.

What Is Van Life?

Van life is a lifestyle in which people live in a refurbished van or other large vehicle typically used to travel domestically. Similar to the tiny house movement, van life has garnered a cult following in recent years, partially spurred by the pandemic. Many “van lifers” document the process of converting their vehicles into living spaces as well as their journey traveling, which has grown into a niche market for content creators.

The six-month position is the first of its kind for the Deel team. The social media nomad will document their experience working remotely from the luxury of a fully furnished converted van as they travel across Australia and New Zealand. In exchange, the employee will be paid over $3,400 per month as well as receive free airfare and a stipend for meals, fuel and parking all while working flexible hours.

“Deel is so excited to share stories from the road through our Social Media Nomad role,”  Shannon Sweester, Deel’s director of social media,  told Built In via email. “This person is going to shape the narrative around what remote, global work can unlock.”

The purpose of the role is to help Deel highlight its platform, which helps companies build global workforces from virtually anywhere. Deel offers hiring, payment and compliance management for global teams. The platform also automates the collection of hiring documents like tax forms that are country-specific in more than 150 countries.

The deadline to apply for this position is October 11. More details about the position are available on Deel’s website.

Deel isn’t the first tech company to tap into the van life trend. Last November, Chicago-based logistics unicorn project44 announced it was making luxury van getaways a new employee perk.
