C-17 Senior Project Engineer

The C-17 Avionics & Flight Controls (AVFC) team is seeking a C-17 Project Engineer to perform critical project engineering duties in support of a new development program starting in mid-2025.  This position will be based in Long Beach, California.  This position reports the manager of Development & Integration for the AVFC organization. A key attribute of this position is the ability to provide strong technical leadership over execution in several areas of the new development program.  These could include avionics development (both hardware and software), electrical installation, laboratories, suppliers, verification & validation, and technical publications.  Another key attribute is to drive successful outcomes through the ability to understand the responsibilities and tasks performed by various engineering departments/disciplines, the interaction between departments/disciplines, and how their products/processes affect one another.  Also, must have extensive knowledge of budget management principles and practices, and apply that knowledge to direct healthy financial performance.  Strong knowledge of how Agile development methods are applied to achieve successful project outcomes is highly desired. 

A successful candidate will possess a wide range of project management, engineering, organizational, and communication skills.   This includes the ability to build a successful team, integrate into the business environment, and plan/organize in alignment with the AVFC organization’s strategic goals.  It also includes the skill to interact with customers at all levels, actively seeking information to understand customers' circumstances, problems, expectations, and needs.  The selected candidate will direct and manage complex project schedules requiring interface with internal/external organizations and suppliers. The selected candidate will have extensive and specialized ability to identify and resolve project related issues and provide solutions and/or recommendations to ensure the successful completion of the project.

Position Responsibilities: 

  • Provides technical leadership to a team representing multiple skill areas, which may include internal and external resources and customers.
  • Identifies and manages changes to statement of work and assesses the impact of those changes and incorporates changes into statement of work.
  • Negotiates proposed changes to determine modifications to the deliverables, resources, costs and schedules.
  • Leads project execution to complete the work statement.
  • Identifies performance metrics.
  • Plans, identifies and coordinates resources required over the life of the project or program.
  • Assigns responsibility for activities to team members and ensures technical correctness and consistency of products and services.
  • Compares actual results to baseline plan to assess project performance, efficiencies, productivity and lessons learned.
  • Identifies corrective actions to improve project or team performance.
  • Provides technical, business and integration leadership for the development and execution of project or team plans.
  • Works under consultative direction.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):   

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Engineering
  • 14+ years’ experience with avionics development

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Avionics hardware and software development experience in a leadership role
