About Shift:

We believe car buying should be fun, fair, and accessible to everyone. We’ve set out to transform an industry, using technology to bring transparency and convenience to the car buying process.

And we aren’t stopping there. We seek to bring that same openness and simplicity to car ownership too, with payments, maintenance, and insurance in one easy app. At Shift, we’re building the tools that empower people to buy, own, and sell the cars that make life go.

About the role:

As a Business Intelligence Analyst, you will own Shift’s data governance and lead best practices for consuming and disseminating it to drive product and business decisions. You will drive instrumentation best practices and ensure its set up to answer questions quickly. You will help evangelize a culture of self-serve analytics and data-driven decisions among product management, engineering and design.

You will build dashboards so teams can be aware of what’s going on in their business. More importantly, you will help them get comfortable building charts and dashboards on their own, using modern self-serve product analytics tools.  As a leader, Shift will look to you for answers to some of the most critical analytical and data ingestion issues. You enjoy working with complex data sets and implementing novel solutions to hard problems. You will partner with Data Science and BI teams to establish guidelines for instrumentation and data quality.

We're changing consumer behavior towards an entire industry. Imagine what it would have felt like to be at Amazon or Zappos 10-12 years ago: before next-day delivery was normal, before you bought everything online. That's the kind of impact Shift is having on the world. What we're pursuing today, will become the new normal 10 years from now. Come be a part of it.

This is an opportunity to join a fantastic team at a hi-tech fast-paced Silicon Valley company which is transforming an entire industry. We’d love to talk to you about what great things you’ll do here.

What you'll do:

  • Own data governance including events taxonomy and attributes naming conventions.
  • Work with the Product & Engineering team to recommend improvements to data sources and event instrumentation for simplicity and improved data governance.
  • Drive the design, creation, and maintenance of scalable solutions for analyses, reports, and business dashboards.
  • Write queries and create visualizations for urgent requests as well as on-going reporting projects.
  • Translate business problems into clear analysis requirements.
  • Apply statistical rigor to answer key business questions to help drive business decisions.
  • Troubleshoot data quality issues.
  • Work cross-functionally with key stakeholders (in Engineering, Product, Operations, Marketing, etc.) to communicate your analyses and recommendations.

What we ask for:

  • Masters or Bachelors degree in Statistics, Math, Finance, Computer Science or related discipline.
  • 2+ years of experience using SQL.
  • 5+ years as a BI Engineer, BI Analyst, Product Analytics, or similar role.
  • Experience with product analytics tools such as Amplitude, Segment, Google Analytics, Mixpanel.
  • Experience with query-based business intelligence tools such as Tableau, Looker, Periscope.
  • Experience coding with a scripting language such as Python or R for data analysis.

Nice to have:

  • Familiarity with Airflow and ETLs.
  • Experience working in e-commerce.
  • Experience working at a startup.

On diversity

Our company depends on balance and equality — between buyers and sellers, among employees, and in our relationships with customers.

Our mission to evolve car ownership and transform an industry is a challenging one. It can only be achieved by a team of diverse problem-solvers — engineers, designers, business people — from the same broad demographics as our customers.

Why join now?

We’ve built a small but highly talented team backed by >$275 million in funding from investors like DFJ, Goldman Sachs, BMW, and Nissan. In October 2018 we announced a deep partnership and a $140m round led by the third largest auto retailer in the  US, Lithia Motors. With strong product-market fit and a great business in California, the next two years will be focused on scaling the business nationally.

Shift is the Bay Area’s #1 seller of used cars with $150 million in cars sold per year. We’re serving most of California and are gearing up to scale to new markets. With a solid business model and no clear winner in our space yet, this is a hugely exciting time to join the team.
