About Financial Reporting at CircleCI

You will join CircleCI's data science, analytics and reporting team as a contractor. This team conducts analyses, builds reports and business-intelligence (BI) solutions and fosters the company’s data-driven culture.

You will focus on our Financial reporting. You will build pipelines, conduct analyses and create dashboards, all to support Finance’s financial planning and analysis (FP&A) and cross-departmental initiatives, including budgeting & forecasting, monthly and board reporting, strategic decision support, ad hoc reporting, and analysis.

We have six months of work in our immediate backlog--at least. We have the opportunity to convert from contractor status to a full-time position if there’s a strong match on long-term skills and a close, mutual fit.

What you’ll do:

  • Automate workflows. Learn existing ad hoc workflows, which are frequently Excel-based transformations on data sourced from our data lake and data warehouse. Understand new opportunities for improving reporting. Define automated solutions, which will frequently leverage Python and SQL in an AWS-hosted data platform. Build and maintain pipelines and ETLs. Test and validate code changes along with metrics. Peer review your iterations through requirements, design, and delivery.
  • Discover insights and new transformation. Define agile plans to answer Finance questions. Source data from our data lake, data warehouse, and third-party systems. Clean, explore and aggregate data. Undercover key transformations. Present results to peers and stakeholders.
  • Partner with Finance: Partner with senior managers in Finance. Understand Finance’s data-related needs, pain-points, and opportunities. Analyze and document key requirements in an agile manner. Collaborate with our analytics, product and data-platform teams. Champion improvements to our process and tooling.
  • Build reports and dashboards: Understand Finance’s reporting and dashboarding needs. Collaborate with our data platform team to effectively represent the required data. Design, develop, and maintain a standard suite of reports, dashboards, and visualizations. EOL ineffective reports. Troubleshoot reporting issues. Train Finance on how to best use standardized reports.

What we're looking for:

  • Two years of programming focused on aggregating and manipulating data: At least two years of programmatically processing, transforming and pipelining data; e.g. as an analyst, data developer, BI developer, or data engineer.
  • One year of business intelligence: At least one year of BI experience (e.g., answering business questions, visualizing data, uncovering data transformations).
  • One year of supporting finance-focused stakeholders: At least one year of supporting Finance or financial reporting in a high-growth business is strongly preferred.
  • Fluent in Python, SQL and Excel: Deep Python experience transforming data (e.g., Pandas,, text parsing libraries like `re`,). Deep experience with analytical SQL queries (e.g., inner/left/right joins, CTEs, and window functions). Substantial experience with spreadsheets (e.g., pivot tables and complex math/date/text/array formulae). Plus, experience with a major analytics/visualization platform (e.g., Looker). Familiarity with the AWS data stack (e.g., S3, Athena, RDS). Comfortable in with a version control and testing environment (e.g., GitHub and a CI/CD solution).
  • Technical education: A bachelor’s degree in a technical or quantitative field (e.g., Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Economics, or Finance) is strongly preferred.
  • Right soft skills: Passion for data, discovery, and problem-solving. Curious; confident; open to questioning assumptions and being questioned. Effective communicator across technical and business audiences. Able to manage stakeholder expectations. Entrepreneurial; fast-moving; able to balance planning and execution; and not easily discouraged. An instinct for incremental value.

You can work remotely anywhere in North America. You also have the option to work out of our San Francisco, Denver, Boston or Toronto offices. CircleCI is a distributed company with team members across 50+ cities and 13 countries.
