Position description:

Calico is seeking a bioinformatics research associate / data scientist with experience in analyzing bulk and single-cell genomics and transcriptomics data, in order to partner with and support discovery and translational scientists as well as internal and external genomics/transcriptomics core labs.

As a member of the Computing team you will work closely with other data scientists, software engineers, and bench scientists. 

Position responsibilities:

  • Develop data analysis strategies, write algorithms, and deploy computational tools and documentation for the exploration of genomic and transcriptomic datasets
  • Perform genome annotation, transcript or protein analysis, and data mining of genomes, transcriptomes, or gene families from a range of model organisms
  • Work with software engineering, data science, and genomics teams in experimental design and analysis
  • Interact closely with scientists in discovery and translational research, understand their data manipulation and analysis needs, provide answers to technical questions through 1-on-1 communication, presentations, and written documents

Position requirements:

  • 2+ years of relevant experience with a BS, or master’s degree in quantitative discipline such as computer science, mathematics, computational biology, or bioinformatics.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills
  • Significant programming experience, i.e. having written or maintained codebase using software best practices (e.g. unit tests, self-documenting code) and distributed version control
  • Fluency coding in a Unix/Linux environment with Python and/or R
  • Broad understanding of bioinformatics tools used for genomic and transcriptomic analysis (i.e. assembly, binning, gene calling, etc.), gene function prediction (i.e. sequence alignment, database search), differential expression analysis, and/or dimensionality reduction for single-cell techniques

Nice to have:

  • Experience with at least one of: microbial or mammalian genomics, clinical health records, translational research, clinical drug development
  • Knowledge of statistics
  • Experience with workflow/pipeline frameworks (Luigi, Airflow, etc)
  • Experience with cloud computing and storage, software containerization, Electronic Lab Notebooks
