Maps are no longer static. Our maps represent the ever-evolving world, accessing, aggregating, and adapting anonymous data from millions of sensors and phones in real-time. Mapbox has the exciting opportunity to power devices and products across the next frontier in location-based data, such as Internet of Things and AR/VR.

Whether you’re watching the delivery of your grocery order on Instacart, looking at a gym on ClassPass, sending your snaps on Snapchat, tracking your personal best on Strava, monitoring your gas budget on Metromile, or checking today’s forecast on The Weather Channel, Mapbox is the location and maps within those apps. We’re changing how people move by live-mapping the world. We are the developer platform for location.

What We Do

The Analytics team applies business logic to the underlying data, providing actionable insights to decision makers through easy-to-interpret visualizations, derived tables, and ad hoc analyses. As a data engineer on the Analytics team, you will build and manage underlying platforms and tools that are foundational to fostering a data-driven culture across all of Mapbox. You will create scalable data pipelines and processes to ensure operational excellence in how teams retrieve, interpret, and action on data insights internally. You will have strong autonomy designing and implementing intuitive frontend UIs and efficient backend logic.

What You’ll Do

  • Become the analytics infrastructure and tooling expert, supporting business-focused ETLs and general data discovery at Mapbox.
  • Own and improve on our internal Table Explorer product, which serves as a centralized platform for table discovery, metadata, and lineage for our Data Warehouse.
  • Build automated processes and alerts to ensure critical data pipelines are always operationally excellent in both accuracy and availability.
  • Work cross-functionally with analysts and data engineers to democratize the flow of information at Mapbox, lowering the entry barrier for individual team members to access data and glean insights.

What We Believe are Important Traits for This Role

  • 1-2 years of experience in developing frontend for internal data products and an understanding of typical analyst workflows to transform data into actionable insights. Ideally, you have built an app with React before.
  • Technical fluency. Strong understanding of React and familiarity with AWS products and Airflow. Proficiency in SQL and Python/Spark. Experience debugging big data processing issues (Presto, Hive) is a plus.
  • Build for scale. History of building and maintaining repeatable processes and systems. You deliver on time and the data from your pipelines is rock solid. You look to the future, so that your processes hold up when the company doubles in size.
  • Strong communication. You can communicate complex ideas concisely to a wide audience, whether verbally or in writing. You know how to work across teams, treating others with empathy and respect.
  • Startup mindset. You are a self-starter and like to move fast and iterate. You work cross-functionally and optimize for company-wide impact. You are passionate about promoting a strong data-driven culture across the company.
  • Attention to detail. You take pride in the quality of your data and processes and have a healthy amount of skepticism. Your logic is the critical fallback that prevents decision makers from actioning on inaccurate information. You’re not afraid to roll up your sleeves and dig in.

What We Value

In addition to our core values, which are not unique to this position and are necessary for Mapbox leaders:

  • We value high-performing creative individuals who dig into problems and opportunities.
  • We believe in individuals being their whole selves at work. We commit to this through supportive health care, parental leave, flexibility for the things that come up in life, and innovating on how we think about supporting our people.
  • We emphasize an environment of teaching and learning to equip employees with the tools needed to be successful in their function and the company.
  • We strongly believe in the value of growing a diverse team and encourage people of all backgrounds, genders, ethnicities, abilities, and sexual orientations to apply.

By applying for this position, you acknowledge that you have received the Mapbox Non-US Privacy Notice for applicants, which is linked here. Completing this application requires you to provide personal data, such as your name and contact information, which is mandatory for Mapbox to process your application.
