As data engineers, we build platforms in order to democratize the use of data, and we build pipelines that transform the data, make it accessible, and put it to use.

The Impact You’ll Make

As a Data Engineer, you will partner closely with one or more of our product teams in order to build data-driven products that help Nextdoor build flourishing communities throughout the world. You should be collaborative, resourceful, innovative, and flexible as our work is highly variable between projects and teams.

You will be an integral part of a full-stack team of data scientists, engineers, and product managers working on essential components of our product. Our data infrastructure is essential to widespread interactive community-focused products. As an expert in building robust pipelines to reliably process our petabytes of data, your work will help form the backbone of many of our product initiatives.

We are currently looking to staff our content team, which will focus on integrating new sources of data about what is happening in local communities. We will then transform this data into informative and engaging content via automated pipelines to enrich our Nextdoor member experience. 

You should be excited to bring your experience and expertise every day in order to:

  • Gather requirements, Design, and Implement data-driven products
  • Maintain in depth knowledge of available technology, and data in order to identify innovative and feasible solutions for challenging product initiatives
  • Take responsibility for ensuring the reliability and integrity of our data infrastructure
  • Work closely with a cross-functional team of passionate product engineers and data scientists
  • Utilize your expertise to advise others in their data initiatives
  • Achieve a deep understanding of the business strategy, goals and objectives and support organizational changes by developing and implementing appropriate change management plans, policies and programs.
  • Promote a culture of feedback and transparent communication, reinforcing our mission and core values.

What You’ll Bring to The House

  • BS, MS or PhD in Computer Science with specific interest in data engineering; 2+ years industry experience preferred
  • Extensive experience with Python, Go, or Java and proficiency with SQL
  • Experience designing, building, and debugging data pipelines
  • Experience working in both batch-oriented (hive, spark, etc) and stream-oriented (flink, storm, spark-streaming, etc) data processing
  • Experience working with a wide variety of data formats
  • Familiarity with software engineering standard methodologies (e.g., design patterns, peer code reviews, unit testing)
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong desire to learn about new technologies and systems
  • Bonus Points
  • Experience architecting and deploying distributed systems on the Amazon AWS platform a plus
  • Experience writing technical specifications and design documents
