We're headquartered in San Francisco, but we're building a remote-friendly team across the continental US. We were founded in 2019, and we last raised a $40M Series B in 2021. Our investors include top VCs like Activant, Accomplice, and Greycroft; founders from successful startups like Plaid, SeatGeek, and FiveStars; and executives from major sports teams like the Boston Celtics and Phoenix Suns.
The role
We're looking for our very first data scientist to start and lead our data efforts! Inspired by this excellent post on the stages of data-driven startups, this role is titled "Data Lead" to convey a broader scope: in addition to a typical data scientist hat, you'll also wear hats typical of data engineers and business analysts. (This function is sometimes called "Analytics".)
To that end, we're looking for generalists who are both capable across the data stack and driven by business impact. You'll be the main data owner for major business & product areas like our key company metrics, experimentation, and growth. You'll own data investigations end-to-end, from understanding business requirements and gathering the data, to analyzing it, visualizing it, and ultimately communicating insights from the results.
You won't be alone. We have an existing data pipeline that's decent (using tools & services like Fivetran, DBT, Segment, Redshift, and Mode) and a team that's excited to collaborate with you. You'll work closely with Product, Engineering, Marketing, Customer Support, and others to learn, experiment, and ultimately achieve great impact together.
What we're most excited about, though, is for you to help us build a more data-driven culture - one where we rigorously validate hypotheses through experimentation & iteration, one where we make decisions through tangible quantitative data, and one where we're continuously learning & improving. We'd love for you to teach us how to fish, too, through documentation, tooling, and trainings.
This role is an individual contributor role today, but with potential to manage a team as we grow if that interests you. This role will report to the Head of Engineering, but (as with many data roles) will often have "dotted line" relationships to other parts of the business as needed.
The requirements

Everyone has unique strengths & weaknesses, and we hire for strength & potential, not lack of weakness.• Experience owning areas of data and leading data investigations, being the main point of contact for data questions, collaborating with others to better understand requirements, and being self-driven to answer those questions thoroughly & comprehensively. This is more important to us than a specific # of years of experience, but we expect most candidates to need at least 3-5 years in the industry to gain this experience.• Expert-level proficiency with SQL, and solid proficiency with some other data tools & technologies, e.g. DBT, AWS Redshift, Python (e.g. Pandas), Jupyter, Mode, Segment, Amplitude, etc.• Solid proficiency with statistical concepts & fundamentals.• Passion for both your craft (high-quality data analysis & engineering) and business impact (thoroughly understanding requirements & value).
Locations
We're headquartered in San Francisco, CA, with a beautiful office in the Mission District (near Dolores Park). We welcome employees who want to work from this office; we offer additional benefits to those who do (see below), and relocation assistance to those who'd like to.
We're also hiring remotely across most of the continental US (excluding AK, CO, and HI) for most roles. We work hard to create a first-class, remote-friendly environment, with an additional benefit for remote employees, too (see below).
We regularly bring our team together for offsites & trips, about every 2 months, both for fun and for work. We cover all travel & lodging in these cases.

Our office is located in the Mission District of San Francisco and is within walking distance to multiple BART and muni stations. Take a stroll through Mission Dolores Park to see the iconic views of downtown SF or walk down the street to the trendy bars and restaurants of Valencia Street.
