Location: San Francisco
Our headquarters is located in downtown San Francisco, where our group of cross-functional experts assemble to create experiences for Crunchyroll and VRV’s passionate communities.

About You:

  • A strong software engineering background combined with a background or experience in analytics, machine learning, data algorithms, and big data. Masters or PhD in computer science or quantitative fields is desirable.
  • 5+ years experience building scalable back-end services using Python, Java, C++, C# or other OO programming languages.
  • 5+ years leading data engineering teams.
  • Expertise leading, mentoring, training, and/or hiring a team of talented engineers.
  • Proven track record of building and maintaining complex data systems
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Experience and strong understanding of data processing and tools, including SQL, Map/Reduce, ETL
  • Experience with statistical and visualization tools such as Looker, Tableau
  • Experience with data technologies such as Hadoop, Kafka, HDFS, Spark
  • Agile experience and a sense of urgency
  • Experience with Airflow or other workflow schedulers
  • Experience with data warehouses such as Redshift/Snowflake and data lake solutions
  • Experience with AWS cloud services: EC2, EMR, RDS, S3

A day in the life of our Director of Engineering:

  • Recruit, hire, and mentor exceptional software engineers and data scientists
  • Hire world-class data engineers and provide technical guidance, career development, and mentoring to team members
  • Work with product management, analysts, architects, DevOps, engineering leads, and business stakeholders to define requirements, guide product and architectural vision, lead key technical and design discussions, and prioritize delivery efforts
  • Organize and lead a cross-disciplinary team to execute on the data roadmap
  • Iterate quickly in an agile development process; release code constantly
  • Be involved in all stages of data platform development, from architecture to deployment
  • Create a dynamic, collaborative, and fun team environment
  • Design and architect solutions for data needs across the entire organization
  • Manage the team that builds the infrastructure required for optimal ETL of data from a wide variety of data sources using SQL and AWS 'big data' technologies
  • Ensure high availability of data services that provide critical data for analytics, and real-time machine learning services (Feature Stores, Model Stores, etc.) 
  • Review, select and integrate next-generation technologies into the architectural strategy as needed.
  • Advise business leaders by providing data-based strategic direction to identify and address business issues and opportunities.
  • Exceptional problem solving skills: demonstrated ability to understand business challenges, structure complex problems, develop solutions
