Engineering Manager, Data Platform
The opportunity
Grammarly empowers people to thrive and connect, whenever and wherever they communicate. More than 20 million people around the world use our AI-powered writing assistant every day. All of this begins with our team collaborating in a values-driven and learning-oriented environment.
To achieve our ambitious goals, we’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our Data Platform team. The person in this role will lead a talented team of software engineers focusing on data analytics, experimentation platforms, and product features that adapt to user behavior. They’ll also work cross-functionally with teams across the company.
Grammarly’s engineers and researchers have the freedom to innovate and uncover breakthroughs—and, in turn, influence our product roadmap. The complexity of our technical challenges is growing rapidly as we scale our interfaces, algorithms, and infrastructure. Read more about our stack or hear from our team on our technical blog.
Your impact
Grammarly’s Data Platform team enables every other team at Grammarly to make data-driven decisions without compromising on user privacy. This team also enables rapid experimentation for the Growth and Product teams. Additionally, they own the charter on using analytical data to enable in-product personalization.
As the Engineering Manager, you will:
- Help scale data infrastructure that operates at a huge scale, with daily high-frequency product-usage events from an internet-scale userbase.
- Continue scaling a highly specialized engineering team.
- Support successful execution on a team that operates autonomously and is not embedded within the Product team.
- Help the team find the best possible balance of the three most important aspects of Grammarly’s internal analytics platform: scalability and low cost in terms of infrastructure and engineering effort, low latency while processing and querying huge datasets, and limitless versatility in responding to data queries with deep insights (while also being very easy to use).
- Empower the engineering team to achieve a high level of reliability, simplicity, and productivity.
- Mentor engineers on the team, helping them advance in their careers.
- Help drive engineering-wide initiatives with the rest of the engineering management team.
We’re looking for someone who
- Embodies our E.A.G.E.R. values (Ethical, Adaptable, Gritty, Empathetic, Remarkable).
- Has an innate desire to help engineers learn new skills and advance in their career path.
- Demonstrates a strong track record of building and leading productive engineering teams.
- Can execute with a fair level of autonomy.
- Can systematically break ambiguous problems down and build an execution plan.
- Shows strong technical judgment on engineering architecture and product decisions.
- Will put the user first when reasoning about trade-offs.
- Leads by example and sets the right context for decisions.
- Has experience shipping data-heavy products (analytics/data pipelines/machine learning).
- Is passionate about helping millions of users across the world communicate more effectively, every day.
- Is deeply technical but derives satisfaction in helping the team accomplish audacious goals.
- Cares deeply about not just the work but also how that work is accomplished.
- Thrives in environments that require making decisions with incomplete information but can change course when presented with new data.
- Likes working at multiple levels of the technical stack.
- Is curious and has a learning mindset.
