THE CHALLENGE

Eventbrite has a world-class data repository of live events, powering millions of events and hundreds of millions of ticket transactions each year in 170+ countries. Our platform allows event creators and event goers to have the most meaningful live experiences. As a Principal Data Architect, you will be part of a team that is building our next-generation data infrastructure to support both internal and customer-facing applications. It’s an exciting time in Eventbrite’s Data Engineering organization as we are implementing large paradigm shifts in our data infrastructure, including moving from batch tables to data streams. We are looking to grow our team with very senior engineers who have strong data architecture expertise and can help us to implement this foundational transformation.

THE TEAM

We're a people-focused Engineering organization; the people on our team value working together in small teams to solve significant problems, supporting an active culture of mentorship and inclusion, and pushing themselves to learn new things daily. Pair programming, weekly demos, tech talks, and quarterly hackathons are at the core of how we’ve built our team and product. We believe in engaging with the community, regularly hosting free events with some of the top technical speakers, and actively contributing to open source software (check out Britecharts as an example!). Our technology spans the web, mobile, API, big data, machine learning, search, physical point of sale, and scanning systems.

THE ROLE

The Principal Data Architect role will be a leader within our Data Engineering organization, reporting to the VP of Data Engineering. You will help define and promote our data-driven culture, providing thought leadership for how we use data across the company. You will be responsible for working across Product, Finance, Data Science, Analytics, and Engineering to drive innovative and thoughtful improvements to how we leverage data to improve operational efficiency and build competitive advantage. You will drive key decisions around how we work with data at Eventbrite, both within the Data Strategy Organization and for the broader company, including taking ownership of key database and data warehouse design initiatives. This will include creating new data models as well as improving existing databases and data flows. You will advise our Product and Engineering teams on best data practices and will shape the future landscape of data at Eventbrite, including architecting the databases and data streams to power Eventbrite’s ever growing business. You’ll work on exciting projects that touch all parts of our data ecosystem, including working with technologies such as Spark, Kafka, Python, SQL, Presto, Hive, MySQL, Redis and Tableau. We’re looking for a Principal Data Architect to partner with our Product and Engineering teams to propel Eventbrite’s production data stores to new heights.

As a Principal Data Architect at Eventbrite, you will:

  • Provide technical leadership to engineering teams on database- and data streams-related application design methodologies, system resources, and application tuning.
  • Review database changes from engineering teams and recommend query/schema changes to optimize the performance of database queries.
  • Participate actively in infrastructure and application design, focusing on scalability considerations especially around data storage and access.
  • Collect business requirements and develop as well as document data models to satisfy those requirements.
  • Design solutions in the evolving areas of security, compliance (GDPR/CCPA/Data Privacy), and data retention.
  • Oversee the migration of data from legacy systems to new solutions.
  • Recommend query and schema changes to optimize the performance of database queries.
  • Roll out changes to our production environment to improve data reliability, database uptime, and database availability.
  • Research new technologies, data modeling methods and information management systems to determine which should be incorporated into company data architectures.
  • Evaluate competing data technologies and toolsets from various vendors and open-source products; drive platform selection; lead technical architecture, application design and implementation.
  • Proactively perform requirements and capacity analysis to set clear requirements for scaling Eventbrite’s database resources globally.
  • Lead engineers and product owners to architect data-driven solutions that operate at production scale.
  • Mentor engineers and data architects on the best practices of interacting with transactional datastores in a production environment.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Direct and proven senior-level working experience with data management and information technology
  • Strong data modeling and data structure design skills, with working experience maintaining Entity Relationship Diagrams (ERDs)
  • Proven expertise in SQL, ability to review SQL statements and guide developers with best practices on how to interact with the database in a high-traffic web environment
  • Experience with Stream-processing systems such as Confluent Kafka, Spark-Streaming, and AWS Kinesis
  • Experience managing distributed data storage systems that span hundreds or thousands of nodes (whether that be with MySQL, or something like Kafka or Cassandra)
  • Experience in high user volume, rapidly growing or critical production service environments
  • Deep expertise in cloud computing (preferably AWS), security, cluster sizing, and performance tuning
  • Ability to set up processes and systems to monitor and reduce cloud computing costs for a large organization
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • A strong communicator who can explain complex technical concepts to designers, support, and other engineers
  • A consummate team player who enjoys helping onboard new team members, mentoring, and teaching others

BONUS POINTS

  • Relevant experience managing transactional datastores such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Oracle in large production environments
  • Experience with DynamoDB, Redis, Cassandra, MongoDB or similar NoSQL databases
  • Strong understanding of MySQL internals
  • Experience with Amazon cloud technologies including Aurora, RedShift, S3, and Elastic MapReduce
  • Active Eventbrite user with a passion for live events

  • Our primary application stack is Python and Django based microservices, running on AWS with MySQL back-ends.
  • Our data warehouse relies heavily on Spark pipelines and Hive data tables.
  • Some of the other tools that we use heavily are Redis, Elasticsearch, Kafka, Git, Presto, and an endless supply of coffee.
