About Wing:

Wing is reshaping the future of delivery. We are an on-demand drone delivery service that can deliver food, medicine or other items within minutes. We’ve also developed an unmanned traffic management platform to safely route drones through the sky. Our service is faster, safer and produces far less pollution than traditional delivery. Originally created in 2012 within X, the Moonshot Factory, Wing is now an Alphabet company.

About the Role:

Wing is looking for a Senior Failure Analysis Engineer to join our Reliability team based in Palo Alto, CA and lead hardware failure analysis efforts.  You will investigate suspected hardware issues using knowledge of likely failure causes and best practices.  You will drive root cause and corrective action investigations, working with cross-functional teams from initiation to closure.  This position is an opportunity to combine hands-on laboratory testing and inspection with physics-based analysis and program management.  Your strong interpersonal and communication skills will be key to ensuring adoption of your technical recommendations based on experience, analysis, and testing.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead failure analysis and root cause and corrective action investigations
  • Perform interdisciplinary analyses and testing of flight hardware related to electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and materials
  • Work cross-functionally with a diverse team of electrical, mechanical, and software engineers to relay technical results and drive mitigations based on an understanding of system requirements, integration, and risk
  • Collaborate with development teams to improve hardware reliability based on experience, best practices, test data, and/or analysis
  • Perform and guide laboratory testing within Wing, while requesting and coordinating testing/analysis at external laboratories as needed
  • Prepare and review technical reports to ensure accurate and precise information and recommendations for stakeholders.  Provide critical analysis and assessment of test results and test methodology
  • Expand in-house failure analysis capabilities
  • Assist with incident investigations to support system safety
  • Mentor and train junior engineers

What You’ll Need:

  • 5+ years of experience in hardware failure analysis
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or related discipline
  • In-depth knowledge of failure analysis techniques, strategies, and instruments
  • Experience taking a project to launch, from system requirements and testing to investigating hardware failures following product integration
  • Experience analyzing hardware failures to find root cause in electrical and electromechanical parts (such as DC motors and servos) and suggesting mitigation options
  • Experience with testing, design, failure analysis, and/or incident investigations
  • Competency in at least one scripting language for data analysis and modeling (e.g. MATLAB or Python)
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, the ability to gather and synthesize data into information, and convey technical concepts and conclusions to cross-functional teams

Bonus:

  • M.S./Ph.D. degree
  • Knowledge of common parts and failure modes in consumer electronics and drone applications
  • Knowledge of lithium polymer batteries, their degradation and failure modes
  • Experience specifying and bringing-up test and inspection equipment
  • Experience with reliability statistics and relevant data analysis packages (e.g., Weibull++, JMP, or Minitab)
  • Passion or interest in aviation
