Software Engineer - Big Data (Multiple Locations)
**Considering candidates in San Mateo, Santa Barbara, or US-based remote**
We are seeking a Software Engineer (Big Data) to join our Enterprise Data Engineering team. As a Data Engineer, you will be working on our Data Platform: coding in Python and SQL, using cutting-edge big data technologies such as Snowflake, Airflow, and DBT to build out data pipelines, data lakes, full-stack applications, and analytics tools that scale on the cloud to empower data scientists to gather insights from billions of data points to improve health outcomes.
We have offices in San Mateo and Santa Barbara, but this position is open to any US-based remote employee. Our data engineering team is highly distributed across the US, and we embrace remote work.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ingest data from digital health sources, including fitness trackers, other wearable devices, electronic medical records, survey data, voice transcripts, etc.
- Design scalable, high-performance solutions that continuously handle terabytes of data and enable data scientists to analyze data at scale.
- Address performance and scalability concerns in a fast-growing data pipeline
- Work with internal stakeholders to understand their needs. Develop and deliver products that meet these needs in a timely manner.
- Implement best practices and provide feedback to team members through peer reviews.
- Protect our participants by designing and developing privacy solutions in compliance with regulatory requirements such as CCPA and GDPR.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications:
- 3+ years experience in data engineering or full-stack engineering with strong data skills
- Proficiency with at least one interpreted, object-oriented programming language (Python, Ruby, Java, etc.)
- Experience with SQL databases (e.g., Postgres, MySQL, Oracle) and Distributed Datastores (e.g., S3)
- Strong written and verbal communication
- Work effectively in a collaborative and cross-functional team environment
- Quality-focus, ensuring proper test coverage for all the code you write
- Take personal responsibility for driving initiatives forward and continually improving the product
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with ETL/ELT
- Experience building data warehouses (e.g., Snowflake, Redshift, DBT etc.)
- Proficiency in building data pipelines with big data processing technologies (Spark, Hadoop, Kafka, etc.)
- Experience with Apache Airflow
- Experience with HashiCorp Terraform
