Opportunity Overview:

As a pivotal executive within our Legal team, the Deputy General Counsel plays a crucial role in shaping and overseeing our organization’s legal strategies and operations. This leadership position demands a profound understanding of diverse legal disciplines, including corporate law, healthcare law, commercial law and intellectual property, among others. You will work closely with the General Counsel to provide sound legal advice, implement best practices, and mitigate risks while upholding the highest ethical standards. Additionally, the Deputy General Counsel will serve as a trusted advisor to senior management and cross-functional departments, ensuring our business objectives align with relevant legal requirements and foster a culture of transparency and accountability. With responsibilities ranging from negotiating high-stakes contracts to advising the executive team on critical business issues, the role requires exceptional analytical skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to navigate complex legal landscapes adeptly.

What you will do:

  • Support the transactional and contract needs of, and provide counsel on issues concerning company business, specifically the company’s product offering to its health insurer customers and commercial partners
  • Provide legal and transactional support to vendor contracting and to the Company’s marketing group
  • Assist the General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer with corporate and governance matters
  • Provide legal advice and support to senior management and departments
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and agreements
  • Develop and implement legal strategies to minimize risk
  • Collaborate with external counsel
  • Conduct legal research and analysis to support decision-making 

Your background & requirements:

  • 10+ years legal experience
  • 3-5 years experience as in-house counsel for a healthcare organization
  • Active member in good standing with the state bar
  • Excellent judgement, analytical, problem-solving and negotiation skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially in the areas of contract drafting and explaining legal and business risks to business clients
  • Strong business acumen
    • Ability to drive results and balance management of legal risk with meeting goals of the business
    • Ability to translate complex legal concepts into practical business advice
    • Ability to provide sound, proactive, fact-based legal advice.
    • Ability to independently explore and recommend viable alternatives to overcome legal hurdles whenever possible while appropriately managing risk and compliance for the company.
  • Strong Interpersonal Skills: 
    • Demonstrated leadership skills; ability to lead and participate in cross-functional teams.
    • Ability to collaborate with colleagues and build and maintain rapport with business clients, senior management, peers and subordinates.
    • Objective and neutral, strong conflict-resolution skills
  • Excellent time-management and organizational skills; proficiency in managing multiple priorities simultaneously; ability to work in a fast-paced, results-oriented work environment; ability to work remotely.
  • High ethical standards and integrity
  • Working knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations applicable to the health insurance and health care industry, especially Medicare and Medicaid.
  • Experience with cloud-based technologies and Artificial Intelligence is a plus
  • We’re an east coast based company, so being comfortable with east coast hours is a must.

The salary range for this position is $170,000 to $210,000 annually; as part of a total benefits package which includes health insurance, 401k and bonus. In accordance with state applicable laws, Cohere is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. Individual pay decisions are ultimately based on a number of factors, including but not limited to qualifications for the role, experience level, skillset, and internal alignment.
