Upwork ($UPWK) is the leading tech solution for companies looking to hire the best talent, maintain flexibility, and get more done. We’re passionate about our mission to create economic opportunities so people have better lives. Every year, more than $2 billion of work is done through Upwork by skilled professionals who want the freedom of working anytime, anywhere. Top companies connecting with extraordinary talent around the globe? Upwork is how.

This is a phenomenal time to join Upwork. Globally, companies are re-evaluating how, with whom, and where they stage their workforce. And they're looking to us to help them figure it out.

As the Senior Manager of our Product Language team, you will lead hardworking writers, developing meaningful and persuasive copy that effectively guides customers through product experiences. You will help designers, engineers, and product managers reframe problems and think critically about their design solutions. You will seek to deeply understand our customers and align our copywriting to their needs. And you will work closely with brand and product marketing managers to align product language with our style and voice.

Your responsibilities

  • Supervise, mentor, and develop our team of writers.
  • Proactively build copywriting practices into our lifecycle so writers are involved from the beginning.
  • Act as the liaison between our brand and product marketing teams.
  • Continuously build and share your knowledge on copywriting
  • Build a working knowledge of the state of our product language and the ways we need to improve it.
  • Facilitate and optimize our product language workflow, making sure that our backlog is groomed and aligned to our highest priorities.
  • Craft and define copywriting principles that serve as guideposts for great copy.

What it takes to catch our eye:

  • Able to bring techniques for structuring our writing so it's positively clear what we're saying.
  • Able to craft copy that is compelling enough that our customers stick with it. And, inject a little magic to make our message more memorable.
  • Aptitude to be flexible and proactive within a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • 3+ years of applied experience as a leader in copywriting practices.
  • Excellent people leadership skills, including the ability to attract and retain outstanding talent.
  • Aptitude to think comprehensively about copy (i.e., the content strategy vs. just one piece of messaging).

How to really knock our socks off:

  • Present a portfolio that clearly presents how you contributed to solving complex problems by your strategic messaging decisions.
  • Demonstrate a passion for elevating the place words take in the products we build
  • Highlight proven techniques for building and prioritizing a backlog of work on a central service team.
