Newsweek is actively seeking a visionary and strategic Director, Data and Analytics to lead our data needs. In this crucial role, you will be responsible for managing and mentoring an initial team of professionals with expertise in Data Analytics and Business Intelligence. You will set the comprehensive data strategy for the organization, driving business growth by transforming data into actionable insights. This role will oversee our analytics and BI ecosystem, built on both Google and Microsoft data solutions, with a clear roadmap to incorporate and lead the Data science and engineering skillsets in the future. 

Key Responsibilities: 

Strategic Leadership & Team Management: 

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of data analysts and BI specialists, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment. 
  • Define the vision, strategy, and roadmap for the Data and Analytics department, aligning it with overarching business goals. 
  • Establish departmental goals, KPIs, and operating procedures to ensure excellence in execution and impact. 
  • Champion a data-driven culture throughout the organization by empowering teams with access to timely and accurate insights. 
  • Prepare to assume leadership of the Data Engineering and Data Science needs, guiding its integration, strategy, and execution. 

Analytics & Business Intelligence: 

  • Oversee the development of advanced audience analysis strategies to identify key demographics, behaviors, and trends, utilizing tools like Google Analytics, Comscore, and SimilarWeb. 
  • Direct the creation and enhancement of impactful dashboards and reports using BI platforms such as Microsoft Power BI and Google's data solutions. 
  • Translate complex data findings into clear, actionable insights and strategic recommendations for executive leadership and key stakeholders. 
  • Partner closely with content, marketing, product, and sales teams to provide data-driven guidance that optimizes strategy, enhances audience engagement, and drives revenue. 

Data Strategy & Platform Oversight: 

  • Architect and oversee the organization's data ecosystem, ensuring the scalable collection, integration, and quality of data from multiple sources. 
  • Lead the strategic implementation and utilization of our core data platforms, including Microsoft and Google Cloud Platform data solutions. 
  • Develop and enforce data governance policies and standards to ensure data accuracy, consistency, and security across all systems. 
  • Continuously evaluate and recommend new technologies, tools, and methodologies to advance the company's data capabilities. 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Analytics, Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related field. A Master’s degree is a plus. 
  • 5-6 years of experience in data and analytics, with 2-3 years in a leadership role managing and mentoring a team. 
  • Proven experience building and managing high-performing analytics or BI teams, preferably within the media industry. 
  • Deep expertise with modern BI and analytics platforms, including strong experience with both Microsoft (Power BI, Fabric) and Google (Analytics, BigQuery) ecosystems. 
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with a proven ability to translate complex data into strategic narratives and influence senior executives. 
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple high-priority projects simultaneously. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience with Data Engineering concepts, including ETL/ELT processes, data modeling, and data warehousing. 
  • Proficiency with SQL or Python for advanced data analysis and manipulation. 
  • Knowledge of digital marketing strategies, content performance metrics, and subscription-based business models. 

 

Salary range: $165,000 - $175,000 commensurate with experience
