The Director of Product Development will lead a high-performing team in developing, managing, and enhancing products that fuel growth and profitability. This role demands strategic foresight, deep insurance expertise, and a hands-on leadership style. You’ll ensure offerings remain competitive, compliant, and aligned with Assurant’s vision—while driving immediate impact in a fast-paced environment.

What will be my duties and responsibilities in this job?  

  • Lead and develop a team of Product Managers and Specialists, fostering innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.

  • Drive strategic product development with a focus on profitability, competitive positioning, and customer relevance.

  • Oversee product lifecycle management from ideation through launch and optimization.

  • People leadership: Foster a team culture of proactive, strategic thinking and confident decision-making.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Underwriting, Marketing, Regulatory, IT, Sales, and Operations.

  • Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations across all jurisdictions.

  • Develop and present business cases for new products and enhancements, including financial analysis.

  • Source new business ideas through market research, client interactions, and competitive analysis.

  • Monitor and analyze product performance to inform strategic decisions and rate actions.

  • Lead regulatory filings and strategy, ensuring timely and accurate documentation.

  • Represent product development in client presentations and industry events.

  • Pricing and data analysis, applying actuarial concepts to product profitability.

  • Analyze rate plans, production costs, and competitive positions to assess business impact.

  • Work with affinity teams and channels to align product strategy with distribution goals.

  • Act immediately on in-flight initiatives, including liability limit increases and feature enhancements.

  • Maintain high urgency and readiness, with no ramp-up period—this role requires jumping in from day one.

What are the requirements needed for this position?

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.

  • 7+ years of product management experience in the Property & Casualty (P&C) industry, preferably Renters insurance.

  • Deep understanding of P&C insurance, product lifecycle, regulatory environment, and risk management.

  • Strong leadership skills with a focus on coaching, feedback, and team development.

  • Ability to work in a matrix organization and influence across multiple levels.

  • Broad business knowledge across finance, marketing, operations, underwriting, regulatory, technology, and legal.

What other skills/experience would be helpful to have?  

  • Master’s degree in business, insurance, or related field.

  • Professional insurance designations (AINS, CPCU, ARM, etc.) or relevant licenses.

  • Experience in matrix organizations with strong influencing skills.

  • Advanced financial modeling and strategic planning skills.

Pay Range:

$119,600.00 - $199,800.00

Any posted pay range considers a wide range of compensation factors, including candidate background, experience and work location, while also allowing for salary growth within the position.
