About this role:
The RingCentral Video Engineering (RCV) team is based at our headquarters in Belmont, CA. We are at the forefront of the company’s next-gen and highest priority product advancements. We work closely with local Product and other Engineering teams and remote development centers in Odessa, Ukraine, St. Petersburg, Russia and Xiamen, China.
The person in this highly strategic role will spearhead critical engineering initiatives focused on increasing RingCentral’s leadership footprint in the UCaaS domain. S/he should have a demonstrable track record of managing engineering teams across multiple geographies, delivering products that were business critical and industry defining, and highly successful cross functional collaboration on product architecture, feature definition and implementation.
The Director of Engineering contributes to the strategic objectives of the Video Division by providing the core backend and APIs of the cloud-based production video platform, managing 30+ development and QA team members.
Key success factors include a passion for complex product development, in a 5 9’s uptime and availability environment, plus some experience in real-time communication.
Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership and direction to the backend teams that are responsible for core components and databases. Drive appropriate KPIs for measuring group and individual performance
- Provide technical leadership and guidance, while also contributing to product and system architecture design, with a focus on high availability and reliability
- Own the API strategy and execution (developer tools, demo apps, API documentation, API analytics, QoS)
- Drive cross functional collaboration
- Manage the end-to-end delivery of strategic projects
- Champion the continuous investigation of new technologies, and promote a culture of innovation
- Set clear expectations and create a positive work environment based on accountability
Qualifications:
- MS in Computer Science or equivalent
- 10+ years of experience managing software engineering teams
- Expert level knowledge of the principles of operation, and limitations, of distributed systems
- Strong experience in planning, architecting and managing software development life cycle and best practices
- Knowledge of classical algorithms and data structures
- Experience with complex network architectures
- Experience with VMWare, and AWS or other relevant cloud technologies
- Excellent communication skills
- Excellent project management skills.
- Self motivated, with the ability to excel in a team-oriented, collaborative, and fast-paced environment
- Passion for creating best in class products
Nice-to-have:
- Knowledge of functional programming concepts
- Experience with:
- Messaging middleware
- Node.JS development
- Scala development
- MongoDB, Kafka
- Experience with WebRTC, RTP, signaling protocols (SIP, XMPP)
