About the team:
Our engineers are pioneering tools and technologies to efficiently build outstanding user experience across more than 10 platforms for multiple brands. We collaborate with innovative design, user- experience, and user-testing teams to deliver multifaceted experiences. Video is at the core of our streaming service and is supported by dedicated playback and infrastructure teams. Crunchyroll video platform services more than 4 billion minutes a month of DRM enabled multi-protocol streams across premium and ad-supported flows!
About the role:
As Director of Engineering for Video, you will be responsible for end-to-end video experience. This includes oversight of the video infrastructure team as well as the “player” team that supplies playback SDK to all our clients. This role drives an outstanding video streaming platform for our rapidly growing consumer-facing Crunchyroll subscription and advertising-supported video experiences. The services you would own in leading the Video infrastructure team include our dynamic packager, encoding platform, playback orchestration & manifest manipulation services for SSAI and multi-CDN. The player team is responsible for player SDK that integrates across our clients and supports a broad set of functionality around content protection DRM, interactive and stitched ads, QoS metrics, analytics, ABR and more.
A day in the life of our Director of Engineering, Video:
You will lead this full-stack group in supporting the principal product of video consumption on our service, alongside the Video product owner, code quality assurance, DevOps, and client teams that integrate the player SDK. Crunchyroll has an adventurous innovative roadmap around anime encoding, new AV1 codec adoption, multi-CDN platform, improving video start time & playback experience improvements. We need a strong leader to help us deliver on and help define these goals.
- Provide technical vision for video APIs; working vertically integrated with the player team for quick iteration and alignment.
- Collaborating with product ensuring key business needs are addressed while keeping tech debit in check.
- Guide engineering teams towards test coverage as part of the definition of done mentality and practice.
- Management of project risks and cross-team dependencies.
- Management of team members, supporting their professional and career development.
- Work alongside operations to build new services in coordination with our design patterns and support evaluations of new infrastructure approaches.
- Occasional travel to Chisinau, Moldova.
- Contribute to the engineering community by curating blog posts, open-source publishing of projects, and conference presentation opportunities.
About You:
- 8+ years of management experience
- BS or higher in Computer Science
- 7+ years working on API’s and/or video IP technologies
- Strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and networking
- Understanding of VOD media streaming (DASH & HLS)
- Understanding of client playback, data specs
- Understanding of VAST, VMAP & SSAI across client and service concerns
- Strong understanding of encoding, decoding principals across multiple codecs
- Understanding of Subjective and Objective Quality Video quality evaluations
- Strong familiarity with bitrate ladders ABR algorithms and data-driven decision framework for improving end-user QoE
- Real-time scalable Video processing software in distributed systems architecture
- Familiarity with code design principles, patterns, and best practices
- Familiarity with Ad technologies and Dynamic Ad Insertion is a plus
- Familiarity with Players and Playback cross OTT device, mobile, and web ecosystem
- Familiarity with React Native, Go, and AWS technologies is a strong plus
