About Quality Engineering Team

Varo’s quality engineering team is small but is huge in terms of vision, efficiency, and impact. We’re accountable to be a trusted quality partner to deliver the products with highest business value quickly, predictably & consistently. Our team specializes in functional, automation, load and performance testing at a large scale for highly performant mobile and web applications and backend services and their release management.

About this role

The Director of Quality Engineering reports directly to the CTO and this position is a hands-on influential leader who can manage diverse, smart, and driven engineers to rapidly deliver high-quality products while balancing people's challenges with business requirements and priorities. The role contributes to the success at Varo by defining and driving the tools and automation-driven testing landscape for our evolving platform and applications, as it relates to the delivery of our applications & services.

What you'll do

  • Promote continuous development and improvement within your team and broader engineering organization
  • Coach and mentor your team members, direct reports and peers to be the best they can be while attracting and hiring key talent to uplevel the organization
  • Manage release management activities for development, testing, on-time deployment, and ongoing support of high-quality software products and features with focus on engineering efficiency & CustomerFirst mindset.
  • You’ll use your technical expertise to identify and manage risks, make sound judgments about quality, and stop or accelerate production at the right time.
  • Own Performance Engineering and drive reliability and performance of services from Mobile Apps, client orchestration layers, Backend services and third party integrations
  • Ensure your teams are able to effectively deliver on short term goals while enabling the engineering organization to raise the bar on quality and agility
  • Develop a strong working relationship with your team and stakeholders
  • Work with engineering and product leaders to define and execute a long term quality strategy
  • Be a catalyst to promote 'Quality First' mindset throughout the cross-functional organization
  • Exercise sound judgment, discretion, and timeliness in decision making
  • Enable effective decision making and risk/return tradeoffs using quantitative and qualitative quality metrics

Required skills, experiences, and traits

  • An accomplished thought leader in rapidly delivering the highest quality products and services to your customers while balancing business priorities and resource constraints
  • An accomplished technologist passionate about System Design and Architecture and has a breadth of knowledge across the technology landscape and depth in automation and test strategies.
  • Demonstrated experience Leading test automation development, using frameworks and tools like Junit, TestNG, Appium including web UI automation tools like Selenium RC/WebDriver, as well as REST/gRPC protocols
  • Demonstrated experience in leading performance engineering with the ability to architect solutions to evaluate and improve performance and scalability of Cloud Native platforms and applications using performance test tools such as Gatling, JMeter, or Loadrunner etc. 
  • Sound knowledge of performance testing working with databases such as Microsoft SQL Server, PostGreSQL, and MongoDB
  • Good understanding of both the art and science of benchmark creation and measurement and modeling of system behavior under load
  • Ability in finding the right balance between the velocity/agility of CI/CD and sound judgment of quality/predictability of the outcomes to manage the Release Management of the application and services.
  • Extensive experience being a coach to a team, well versed in hiring and building a high performing team
  • A seasoned collaborator, extremely effective at cross-functional collaboration i.e. bringing Product, Design, and Engineering leaders together, apt in decision making & project management
  • Ability to understand code in various programming languages like Java, Kotlin, Python, Javascript (Frameworks like React.JS) to automate tests for the full solution stack (UI, App Layer, API, microservice, batch jobs, etc.)
  • Knowledge of White Box Testing practices using tools like SonarQube, JaCoCO etc.
  • Extensive experience using any standard test case management tools & bug management tools like JIRA-SynapseRT or any leading tools.
  • Detailed knowledge of software engineering best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control, build and release processes, continuous deployment, and test suite development and maintenance
  • Strong problem-solving skills with analytical capabilities to be able to support theories/solutions
  • 5+ years of management experience managing a team of 20+ engineers and Engineering Managers in different geographical locations
  • 5+ years of hands-on technical leadership experience in quality & performance engineering practices, test automation, CI/CD, SDLC, etc.
  • Has Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience required
  • Equivalent industry experience for 15+ years in delivering software test automation practices with various automation tools with different testing methodologies and mentoring SDETs
  • Equivalent industry experience for 10+ years as a software engineer building and writing code for various e-commerce and mentoring software engineers
