YOUR MISSION

As Director of Engineering, you’ll lead a group of teams building MURAL’s capabilities around identity and access management, as well as data retention, protection, and governance. You’ll lead a group of Engineering Managers, partner closely with a Product Management leader, and help us build and develop product capabilities that are critical to our business. This position reports to our VP Engineering, Enterprise.

MURAL is transforming how teams put imagination to work by making it easy for everyone to collaborate visually from anywhere, and for us to succeed in large customer environments, we need to have sophisticated and smooth-running enterprise capabilities. Your teams own all aspects of Identity and Access controls, device management, single sign-on and SCIM API provisioning, IP and network security features, as well as eDiscovery and data retention/deletion features. Like all of MURAL, your organization is globally distributed and works 100% remotely.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead an outstanding team of Engineering Managers - hiring, coaching, mentoring, and developing leaders.
  • Partner closely with Product Management - you’ll have a PM counterpart that covers the same teams you do. Your EMs also will work closely with PMs at the team-level, and supporting and helping develop those relationships is critical.
  • Set and hold high expectations from your managers and from your teams in terms of empowerment, autonomy, delivery, quality, workload & life balance, and communication
  • Work with business stakeholders to understand and anticipate customer needs in their workflows, including running point on customer escalations, incidents, etc.
  • Contribute to engineering-wide initiatives as a leader in MURAL’s engineering management team.
  • Work with other MURAL leaders to design and drive plans for our engineering vision and culture.

IN THE FIRST MONTH, YOU WILL:

  • Build alliances with your manager reports, their engineers, as well as your peers, partners, and stakeholders
  • Establish your personal workflows for handling your various responsibilities
  • Understand your teams’ workflows, constraints, roles, ceremonies, purpose, and needs from the business
  • Begin learning the problem domains your teams work in, understanding their customers, and learning MURAL’s product and capabilities

IN THE FIRST THREE MONTHS, YOU WILL:

  • Work with your Product Management partner and their team to understand and refine your teams’ strategy, develop staffing plans, ensure alignment, and understand their priorities and roadmaps
  • Build out your team of managers, attracting and hiring great leaders, and assist with hiring for engineers or other roles within your organization
  • Coach your managers, helping them to understand and contextualize their own strengths and successes and start identifying and communicating development opportunities
  • Receive & provide mentorship and peer leadership to managers from other groups through our “Voltron Alliance” manager team-building program
  • Actively manage customer escalations, interruptions, and partner expectations

IN THE FIRST SIX MONTHS, YOU WILL:

  • Advocate for and celebrate the accomplishments of your managers through our reviews and promotion recommendation process, and help your managers do the same for their teams
  • Develop a strong internal reputation within your stakeholder community as a great partner to work with
  • Become conversationally fluent about the high-level architecture of your teams
  • Identify key areas of technical debt or future risk, and work with your managers and engineers to identify needed investments and advocate for their prioritization
  • Identify stretch opportunities for your teams and individual managers and engineers and help place people in the right place at the right time to turbocharge their development

YOUR PROFILE

  • You have at least 3 years of experience directly managing high-performing software engineering teams as a Senior Engineering Manager.
  • You have evaluated, coached, and mentored engineering managers, ideally with managers as your direct reports, and are familiar with the challenges of “leader-of-leaders” roles.
  • Your past teams have delivered using modern agile methodologies, shipping high-quality and reliable software in regular, iterative releases.
  • You have a track record of attracting, developing, and advancing great engineers.
  • Your teams have delivered cloud-native software, ideally in a high-growth SaaS environment.
  • You’ve succeeded in managing people from other countries, cultures, and timezones and are comfortable working and managing 100% remotely.
  • You have an excellent command of English, both written and verbal.

Ideally you have...

  • Experience in the Identity, Access Management, or User Management problem domains
  • Experience working in Node.JS, React, and TypeScript stacks
