At Span, we are building products to enable the rapid adoption of renewable energy. As more distributed energy resources like solar and storage come onto the grid, it’s increasingly important to be able to improve the technology that sits between the grid, the home, and those distributed energy resources. Span’s smart panel replaces the electrical panel to become the center for connected power in the home.  With Span, homeowners receive all the safety features of a standard panel with revolutionary insights and edge-of-grid controls through our mobile app.

The Role

We are seeking a Director of Software Engineering to lead our growing software organization inclusive of frontend/mobile, backend, and firmware teams. In this role, you will guide the software team through design and development of our current and future products. 

You are comfortable taking action in an environment where complete information is unavailable and can enable your team to deliver well-architected products that maintain high quality. Experience coordinating many moving parts to meet tight deadlines and have contingency plans ready when priorities shift is a must-have. To be successful in the position you will have had previous experience working in Internet of Things products top to bottom and know how to guide and unblock cross domain development teams.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

• Define the technical roadmap of the software products and empower the team to deliver those plans on time, on budget and with high quality.
• Move in lockstep with Product and Hardware Engineering to execute a cohesive product vision. 
• Identify opportunities to improve processes, tools, product performance, and technology enhancements.
• Develop a hiring plan to grow the software team as needs require.
• Fluently speak to how the software roadmap fits into Span’s overall business strategy.
• Provide coaching to your engineering leaders and teams.
• Pitch in with architecture and code reviews when appropriate.
• Be a Span product advocate.

About You

We are seeking an engineering leader who has:

• 10+ years of experience building technical software products; with at least 7 of those years as a manager of an engineering team.
• A history of scaling tech teams and products with a passion for mentoring your direct reports in both technical achievement and career growth.
• Relentlessly strive to push towards best practices and team goals while being flexible in a fast paced startup environment.
• Experience working in an environment with multiple programming languages (we mostly use Typescript, Python, Rust, and C).
• Previous hands-on experience with some of the following; AWS or other cloud platforms (e.g. GCP, Azure), Development of internal and external APIs with Rest, Graphql, Swagger, Protocol Buffers etc., Frontend development on iOS, Android and Web, Embedded software (e.g. Microcontrollers with an RTOS, Embedded Linux (Yocto), wireless protocols, network connectivity, security, over the air updates).
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or a closely related field

Bonus Points

• Experience building products for both B2B and B2C users.
• Experience leading teams in a small but rapidly growing startup environment.
• Experience working in the energy industry.
• Experience partnering with in house hardware and manufacturing teams.
• Experience with cross platform mobile development (e.g. React Native).
