Core Platform Engineering
Location: San Diego, Santa Clara, San Francisco, Kirkland, Chicago, Remote

What you get to do in this role:
As a Principal/Distinguished Software Engineer with the Platform Development team, your focus will be on big picture and big impact challenges and you will have a lot of responsibility for defining your day-to-day work. Basic framing of your work looks like:
- Finding, describing, and driving key initiatives that address complex, system-wide problems.
- Identify opportunities to evolve the ServiceNow platform to our next generation "new planet" infrastructure.
- Determining how ServiceNow can join or lead in larger industry trends and conversations that are important for our future, for our customers, and for the communities we affect.
- Bring your perspective and experience to help the right teams solve the right problems.
- You will collaborate with other leaders in cross-functional teams to tackle the biggest issues facing ServiceNow and our customers.
- Leverage your experience coaching and mentoring your coworkers.
- Flex your 21st century innovation skills in many of the emerging platform technologies.
Qualifications
In order to be successful in this role, we need someone who:
- Has broad and deep experience delivering highly scalable enterprise software. Several releases of several projects that solved the problems of several customers.
- Has a passion for the problems of software from the top of the tallest ivory tower all the way down to getting dirt under your fingernails in the garden.
- Has experience transforming a large monolithic enterprise platform.
- Is opinionated and argumentative at times but has the emotional intelligence to keep to our core "hungry and humble" value.
Essential experience:
- A deep understanding of the trade-offs and issues surrounding concurrency, consistency, and scaling in server-side systems.
- Delivering software in the Java ecosystem (Maven, Git, Junit, Jenkins, etc, or similar)
- Design expertise of highly available, fault-tolerant, and scalable platforms.
- Working with and within relational databases, with emphasis on Postgres, MySQL and Oracle.
- Ability to communicate effectively across multiple business units building consensus in a hyper-collaborative environment.
Helpful experience:
- Using both client-side and server-side JavaScript frameworks, libraries, and toolsets.
- Deploying, leveraging, or designing cloud infrastructure and the CNCF toolsets used by companies to create value with cloud-backed solutions.
- Bachelor's/Master's/PhD degree in Computer Science

Work personas
Work personas are categories that are assigned to employees depending on the nature of their work. Employees will fall into one of three categories: Remote, Flexible or Required in Office.
Required in Office
A required in office work persona is defined as an employee who is contracted to work from or aligned to a ServiceNow-affiliated office. This persona is required to work from their assigned workplace location 100% of the work week based on the business needs of their role.
Flexible
A flexible work persona is defined as an employee who is contracted to work from or aligned to a ServiceNow-affiliated office and will work from their assigned workplace location roughly 3 days/week or less (generally around 40-60% of the work week). Flexible employees may choose to work the remaining working time from their workplace location or home. Flexible employees are required to work within their state, province, region, or country of employment.
Remote
A remote work persona is defined as an employee who performs their responsibilities exclusively outside of a ServiceNow workplace and is not contracted or aligned to a ServiceNow-affiliated office, including those whose place of work (pursuant to their terms and conditions of employment) is their home. Remote employees are required to work within their state, province, region, or country of employment.
