Job Description

Your job as an engineering manager will be more of a hybrid role at the start. Currently the team has 2 engineers, so upon joining the team you will do a lot of coding and have a lot of individual contributions. As you hire more engineers on the team, your role will transition to a managerial one.

As an Android payment engineer, you will work on payment features directly used by millions of shoppers worldwide. You will have a great deal of responsibility for each project you work on and will have the flexibility to influence design and execution. With full transparency to all metrics, you will get to see how your features directly impact the company’s performance and make data-driven decisions.

As a manager you will be building our payment team, managing engineering processes, leading a wide variety of payments projects, actively collaborating with external partners and internal business teams, and supporting everything payments related on the Android team.

For this role, you should be hands-on, driven, want to make an impact and grow your career and have a solid foundation in computer science. You should have strong competencies in Android development, software design, problem solving, testing and debugging, and contribute under a great deal of independence. We are ultimately looking for someone who is capable and passionate to help us hack social commerce.

Not located in the Bay Area? US and Canada remote work is acceptable!

What you'll be doing:

  • Manage Engineering processes, workflows and schedules to support multiple high impact business initiatives
  • Lead and be highly involved in the evolution of a diverse engineering team capable of rapid iteration & delivery of technical solutions in an “incubator” style environment
  • Actively collaborate with business teams and product managers on product iterations
  • Support the engineering team by removing obstacles and establishing best practices to increase productivity and ensure your team produces extraordinary output
  • Provide technical guidance and direction to the engineering team
  • Build a mid to long term road-map to improve the quality of the system, setting clear directions for the team and anticipating challenges through strategic planning
  • Develop and nurture a positive and collaborative culture that embodies Wish’s values
  • Coach and mentor the team and support professional development and growth
  • Build and maintain an outstanding engineering bar
  • Hire outstanding talents that raise the engineering standards and quality.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS in Computer Science, Math, Physics or related field, with higher degree considered an asset
  • Highly collaborative leader with a desire to stay close to the code
  • 5+ years of experience developing native Android applications in Java and Kotlin.
  • 3+ years of experience directly managing 3 or more people
  • Proficient in Android development, application design philosophies (MVC, MVVM, etc.), source code management (git), clean API design, etc
  • Familiarity with payment processors and payments systems (Google Pay, PayPal, Stripe, etc) is a big plus
  • Proven experience scaling and managing multi-level engineering team
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Inspired by the mission of helping underserved consumers and small retailers thrive in a global, mobile first economy
  • Capable of leading rapid development and iteration in an “Incubator” style environment
  • Familiarity with A/B testing
  • Has creative ideas and proves them with data-driven methods
  • Self motivated, relentlessly focused on impact and able to operate under great deal of independence
  • Learns quickly and is willing to take calculated risks
