Engineering Manager, Data Ingestion
Over the coming years, biotech will fundamentally rewrite the way we live. Gene editing and cell therapy are dramatically changing how we treat cancer and other major illnesses. Biofuels and biomaterials are transforming the cars we drive, the clothes we wear, and the makeup of everyday objects. Crop science and synthetic biology are producing sustainable and ethical food. Benchling’s mission is to accelerate the research that propels us towards this reality, and magnify its impact, through modern software.
Every day, scientists around the world use Benchling’s applications, platform, & analytics in their efforts to solve humanity’s most pressing problems. For these scientists, Benchling is the central technology they use to conduct their research. Our customers include pharmaceutical giants, leading biotechs, and the world’s most renowned research institutes.
ROLE OVERVIEW
Benchling is on a mission to accelerate the pace of life sciences research. To do that, we build a suite of tools that scientists use daily to solve humanity’s most pressing problems. Some of these tools help scientists better collaborate with each other—like our electronic lab notebook & workflow product. Others help scientists do their individual research—like our molecular biology suite, which scientists use to analyze & work with DNA. To be useful, all of the tools that we build require lots of high-quality experimental data. That’s where the Data Ingestion team comes in.
The Data Ingestion team makes it easy to get lots of high-quality life sciences data into Benchling. We do this by building user interfaces for data entry & providing a lab automation platform, which companies use to orchestrate and collect results from experiments run by robots. As laboratories across the life sciences space modernize, we expect that it’ll become increasingly important for us to expand the capabilities that we offer for automated data creation.
We’re looking for an engineering manager to support & lead this team. In this role you’ll work closely with a talented group of engineers as they build the platforms and product experiences that scientists use to get data into Benchling. You’ll also collaborate closely with product, design, customer success, and our infrastructure teams to set Benchling’s long-term data ingestion strategy. This role is a particularly good fit for leaders who have a history of complex technical products which their users love.
Responsibilities:
- Recruit, hire, and grow a team of excellent product + platform engineers.
- Work with product managers, designers, and customer experience to define a long-term roadmap that supports the shift in life sciences research toward robot-powered experimentation.
- Support and lead the engineering team as they build UX and platforms for ingesting data into Benchling.
- Work alongside other managers to scale Benchling’s Engineering, Product, and Design organization.
- Make Benchling a great place to work by actively supporting career development, and by fostering an inclusive team where everyone feels welcome.
Qualifications:
- You’ve been a manager for at least three years, and you have at least five years of experience in software development.
- You’ve recruited excellent early-career + experienced engineers & supported their growth.
- You have a track record of building a healthy, inclusive team culture in which folks from all walks of life can contribute.
- You have experience building a high-performing team which consistently & rapidly build products that your customers love & which deliver excellent results for your business.
- You hold an unyieldingly high bar for customer-facing work.
- You have a history of strong contributions as an engineer and/or a technical leader on technical initiatives which span several months & many teams.
Additional preferred skills:
- You’ve worked in small organizations (sub-30 engineering team) and larger organizations (150+ engineers).
- As an engineer or manager, you’ve built technical products for customers with complex requirements. We’re particularly interested in folks with experience building data-focused products.
- You have a background, or an interest, in life sciences companies (agricultural technology, pharmaceutical, biofuel, medical).
Benchling welcomes everyone. We believe every member of our team enriches our diversity and inclusion by broadening our ways of problem-solving for future challenges. Even if you don't meet 100% of the qualifications for this job, we strongly encourage you to apply.
