We are looking for a talented Engineering Manager with expertise in Mapping and Localization. At Cruise, we believe in managers who remain deeply technical, and understand the challenges their teams are facing, even though they may not be contributing code day to day. Our managers coach their teams to success, shield their teams from distractions, and help publicly celebrate wins.
What you'll be doing:
- Lead and grow an engineering team in building a well-tested, high-reliability, and high-integrity localization system, with specific focus on lidar and camera-based SLAM, as well as novel 3D point cloud and feature-based registration techniques
- Work with your team to set a technical direction including requirements definition, system architecture, implementation, integration, and testing strategies.
- Conduct code reviews and give guidance on engineering best practices
- Coordinate your team’s work inside the company: identify priorities, communicate successes and recruit additional resources when challenges arise.
- Conduct performance reviews, identify top performers, and support their growth into Engineering Management or Technical Leadership roles.
- Invest heavily in recruiting by working closely with recruiters, engaging candidates, and identifying opportunities for external engagement to improve the Cruise engineering brand.
What you must have:
- Master’s / PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related discipline focusing on lidar or visual SLAM, HD mapping, and/or state estimation/sensor fusion.
- 5+ years industry experience including localization/mapping algorithms for autonomous vehicles.
- 2+ years experience managing engineering teams and setting their technical direction.
- Strong skills developing C++ applications in Linux environments.
- 3+ years experience developing software following modern software engineering best practices.

- Experience with ROS.
- Experience shipping and maintaining in a production environment.
- Experience characterizing and setting requirements for proprioceptive sensing hardware.
- Experience with FMEA, FTA, or similar safety analysis techniques.
