Engineering Manager - Network Reliability Engineering

Fastly is seeking a hands-on leader for a growing Network Reliability Engineering (NRE) team. NRE facilitates the introduction of complex new technology and new product initiatives, while also providing mentorship and guidance for a global team of front-line engineers. You will work across boundaries with senior leadership and stakeholders to set, and execute on, NRE strategy and vision that is focused on continued improvements to automation, process, and operational support systems. These improvements provide additional reliability to Fastly’s edge cloud platform, and increased confidence to the engineers at the controls.

What You'll Do

  • As a customer of the Network Management and Automation team, provide software development leadership and direct contributions towards tools, monitoring, workflows, and automation systems that improve how we operate the network. This role acts as a bridge between our front-line operations teams and the pure software engineers.
  • Work collaboratively with program teams and platform stakeholders in the prioritization and on-time delivery of new network-related technologies and services to the global platform.
  • Mentor and develop a team of seasoned network engineers in the creation and curation of frameworks, processes, and procedures that provide added reliability to Fastly’s edge cloud platform.
  • Act as an escalation point for events requiring high levels of coordination and leadership.
  • Work as part of extended architecture team for iteration of POP design, network posture, and platform advancements.
  • Work with fellow TechOps leadership to drive improvements in both tactical operations and long-running incidents and problems.
  • Develop KPI’s and metrics that measure availability and change velocity.
  • Provide technical expertise in an anycast-heavy, diversely connected global network.

What We're Looking For

  • 5-7 years experience designing, building, and/or operating big networks.
  • 2-4 years of leading a team in a network engineering and automation capacity.
  • Fluency in devops/netdevops software development, with a heavy focus on network automation that is built upon platforms like Ansible and Stackstorm.
  • Strong IP routing knowledge, with a focus on troubleshooting BGP at a global level.
  • Deep understanding of TCP/IP, and the potential pitfalls of anycast.
  • Sound understanding of how CDNs work and their position in the global internet.
  • Exposure to complex load-balanced and multipath network topologies.
  • High degree of comfort in a Linux environment, with heavy exposure to the network stack.
  • A desire to have a direct impact on making the internet a better place for everyone.

  • We love distributed teams. Fastly’s home-base is in San Francisco, but we have multiple offices and employees sprinkled around the globe. In fact, 50% of our employees work outside of SF! An international remote culture is in our DNA.
  • We care about you. Fastly works hard to create a positive environment for our employees, and we think your life outside of work is important too. We support our teams with great benefits like up to 20 weeks of paid parental leave, options for free medical/dental/vision plans, and an open vacation program that enables our folks to take the time they need to recharge (some benefits may vary by location).
  • We value diversity. Growing and maintaining our inclusive and diverse team matters to us. We are committed to being a company where our employees feel comfortable bringing their authentic selves to work and have the ability to be successful -- every day.
