When deploying applications in production, developers have to pick between two imperfect extremes: expensive yet simplistic platforms like Heroku, or complicated, do-it-all-yourself services like AWS. By contrast, Render makes it easy to get up and running quickly but also allows applications to scale and increase in complexity over time, preventing a transition to DIY infrastructure.

Render completely frees up developers and teams from managing infrastructure. Ultimately, this improves the quality of all software and enables entirely new kinds of applications.

As Render's first engineering manager, you will have an outsized impact on our trajectory and culture, and the opportunity to scale with the company as we grow. Your goal is simple: improve the outcomes for your team and its members.

What we're looking for

  • At least 5 years of experience managing and developing engineering teams at high growth technology startups.
  • Prior experience building products across the stack and a deep understanding of web frameworks, APIs, databases, and multiple backend languages.
  • A strong affinity for developing people and teams through hands-on mentoring.
  • The ability to drive and manage creative conflict to achieve better outcomes.
  • Experience facilitating difficult one-on-one and group conversations with empathy and fairness.
  • High integrity, low ego, inquisitiveness, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
  • Bonus points for experience hiring and managing engineering managers.

  • Be a multiplier for your team; help them do their best work as individuals and as a team.
  • Support your team in fulfilling their career goals.
  • Work on cross-functional planning and create processes to help achieve personal, team, and company goals.
  • Increase Render's diversity of gender, perspective, and ethnicity through conscientious and proactive hiring.
  • Predict and manage organizational scaling issues and prevent them from happening where possible.
  • Facilitate collaboration between engineering, design, growth and other business functions.
