We are a San Francisco based team building self-driving semi trucks. We have raised $117MM in total and are backed by Tiger Global Management ($70MM Series C) and Sequoia Capital ($30MM Series B). We move freight daily between LA and Phoenix using our purpose built transfer hubs. This is an incredibly exciting time for autonomous driving and our team is looking to grow.

We are looking for a software developer to join the Perception Team to increase the efficiency and robustness of our development by building software tools and infrastructure, such as perception correctness evaluation tools, and infrastructure for curating sensor data for human-labeling and artificial neural network training. Work closely with our deep learning team to develop cutting edge AI solutions.

The Perception Team is responsible for designing algorithms and artificial neural networks, and turning them into production in-truck software, for the purpose of creating a reliable statistical three-dimensional model of the relevant environment around our trucks, using all available sensor and map data. This resulting World Model is used by downstream in-truck software components to plan and execute truck behavior.

Responsibilities:

• This role is responsible for newly developing or improving Perception Team software tools and infrastructure, usually in collaboration with other Perception engineers and other teams. Here is a partial list of goals of example software to be developed or improved:
• Object (obstacle) estimation correctness evaluation
• Lane estimation correctness evaluation
• Sensor data annotation and annotation quality assurance
• Data selection and distribution visualization
• Neural network metrics computation and visualization
• Neural network development process streamlining and parallelization
• Map inspection, editing, and extending

Your Experience Might Include:

• Proficient Python coding skills
• Proficient C++ coding skills
• Experience with classical relational (SQL-based) databases 
• Experience building applications on cloud infrastructure platforms (AWS or GCP), utilizing cloud compute resources (e.g. EC2) and cloud object storage (e.g. S3)
• Experience working full-stack to develop useful applications - you should feel comfortable writing backend APIs from scratch and building out frontend interfaces
• Ability to start with limited requirements, independently collect and solicit the necessary further information, and iteratively develop expected software
• Intuition for designing effective data visualizations and user interfaces
• Intuition for dealing with large data
• Proficiency with one or more development frameworks, tools, or libraries for: facilitating developing effective data visualizations and user interfaces, developing databases and interfacing to them, performing parallel computing in the cloud

Bonus Points:

• Experience with one or more role responsibilities, or with similar work
• Familiarity with artificial neural networks operation, development process, and tools
• Familiarity with state estimation theory, in particular statistics-based methods for dealing with uncertainty
• Familiarity with ground vehicle physics
• Experience building scalable data pipelines
• Experience deploying applications on Kubernetes
• Significant frontend experience with React
• Exposure to, or demonstrated interest in, autonomous vehicles development
