About Wing:

Wing is reshaping the future of delivery. We are an on-demand drone delivery service that can deliver food, medicine or other items within minutes. We’ve also developed an unmanned traffic management platform to safely route drones through the sky. Our service is faster, safer and produces far less pollution than traditional delivery. Originally created in 2012 within X, the Moonshot Factory, Wing is now an Alphabet company.

About the Role:

Wing is looking for a Hardware Reliability Engineer to join our Reliability team based in Palo Alto, CA to help execute Wing’s hardware reliability program.  You will define reliability tests for new and existing hardware using knowledge of best practices and statistics.  You will work with other hardware engineers to improve component designs and select appropriate materials.  You will perform root cause and failure analyses, driving cross-functional investigations from initiation to closure.  This position is an opportunity to combine hands-on laboratory testing and inspection with physics-based analysis and program management.  Your strong interpersonal and communication skills will be key to ensuring adoption of your technical recommendations based on experience and testing.

What You’ll Do:

  • Work cross-functionally with a diverse team of electrical, mechanical, and software engineers to define and execute design verification and durability tests for electronic and mechatronic flight hardware
  • Perform failure analysis and root cause and corrective action investigations
  • Collaborate with development teams to improve hardware reliability based on experience, best practices, test data, and/or analysis
  • Recommend materials or other changes for design engineers to improve hardware reliability and performance
  • Develop a roadmap for product reliability requirements and test coverage appropriate for various stages of vehicle prototyping and fleet build-out
  • Collect and perform statistical analysis of field data to derive reliability requirements and test parameters
  • Expand in-house environmental test and analysis capabilities where it makes sense and manage relationships with outside vendors where appropriate

What You’ll Need:

  • 5+ years of experience in hardware reliability and failure analysis
  • B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or related discipline
  • Experience taking a project to launch, from system requirements through testing
  • Experience analyzing hardware failures to find root cause on electromechanical parts such as DC motors and servos
  • Knowledge of reliability analysis and failure distribution modeling
  • Competency in at least one scripting language for data analysis and modeling (e.g., MATLAB or Python)

Bonus:

  • Knowledge of engineering materials common in consumer electronics and drone applications
  • Experience specifying and bringing-up test and inspection equipment
  • Knowledge of Design of Experiments (DoE)
  • Experience with reliability statistics and relevant data analysis packages (e.g., Weibull++, JMP, or Minitab)
  • M.S./Ph.D. degree
