Head of Developer Experience
Atlassian is continuing to hire with all interviewing and on-boarding done virtually due to COVID-19. Everyone new to the team, along with our current staff, will temporarily work from home until it is safe to return to our offices.
As the Head of Developer Experience, you will be responsible for how developers discover, onboard, build, and scale apps that complement Atlassian’s suite of products. This includes:Setting the vision and strategy for Atlassian’s developer experience and community, including partners and customers. Scaling a team that can help guide the developer community through all phases of the developer lifecycle. Offering mentorship and support to minimize developer pain. Scaling growth of our developers on Atlassian’s platform and encouraging the next generation of developers on Atlassian!You will lead the team responsible for:
- Partner engineering (high-touch dev engagement)
- Developer relations (1:many dev engagement including community, education, events, evangelism)
- Developer tooling and content (sample apps, projects)
- Technical support
- Developer + platform feedback
We're looking for a developer at heart, ideally having deep domain knowledge in professional development, distributed systems, and building SaaS offerings. You must be passionate about growing and nurturing developer communities. And a proven leader that can inspire a world-class developer experience team, distributed across the globe. With multiple products (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, Trello, Opsgenie) and frameworks to support (P2, Connect, Forge, webhooks), there is no shortage of opportunities to scale this function. This role will be a mix of execution and strategy, so if you love getting your hands dirty while reimagining how developers scale on the Atlassian platform, we believe this job is for you!
What you will do:
Set the vision
-Develop and champion the near and long term strategy for how developers discover, onboard, build, and scale applications
-Prioritize and balance key initiatives based on data, feedback, and needs of the businesses and developers
-Define, drive, and own developer and business success metrics
Build the team
-Inspire and scale a kick-ass, high impact developer experience team
-Partner with customers, partners, and internal stakeholders to execute on our developer experience and platform strategy
-Drive and implement best practices for developer experience, engineering management, and organizational development
Scale developers
-Learn and understand the near and long term needs of customers, partners, internal stakeholders
-Define and own a best-in-class onboarding and technology elements of the go-to-market strategy for developer experience
-Help customers architect and develop applications, efficiently leveraging the right platform services
-Generate technical content (sample apps, SDKs, tech docs, integration guides, best practices, blogs, preos) to raise the bar on quality, yet lower the bar on time to get started
-Partner with peer functions and organizations to deliver the training and enablement developers require
-Streamline how we roll out new features and changes to the community (breaking changes)
-Provide technical support and troubleshooting for the developer platform, including collaborating with product, dev, and business stakeholders
-Engage and embrace the developer community (vision, events, hacks, meet ups)
-Improve developer satisfaction and grow the developer community
Drive change
-Be the champion for the developer community for the executive team
-Consolidate feedback and make technical recommendations to product and engineering teams to help evolve the platform
-Ensure recommendations and best practices are folded into our products as well as developer implementations
About you:
- 15+ years as a developer and / or in developer experience, including leadership and management
- Strong, passionate leader with demonstrable ability to encourage a team as well as challenge the status quo to shake it upExcel at leading a distributed team
- Data-informed mentality and quantitative approach to scaling teams and setting prioritiesProduct-oriented attitude, putting customers and developers first
- Well organized and dedicated at prioritization
- Developer-at-heart, having built, led, and supported a scaled production-grade app at some point in your career
- Deep understanding of developer operations, experience, and developer tooling
- Ability to roll up your sleeves and get into it if needed (code test apps)
- Passion for developer communities, working with the scrappiest of startups and the largest of enterprises
- Superb communicator in written and oral forms to BOTH technical and non-technical audiences
- Keen, multi-functional collaborator with a strong EQ and GSD demeanor
- Efficient at working across both internal and external organizations, including customers and developers
- Glass-half-full creative problem solver that doesn’t take no for an answer and will for what is right
- Strong Java, Javascript, and web API standards skills to help speak the same language of Atlassian’s products and community
