Vicarious aims to transform robotics by creating robots with human level performance on real-world manipulation tasks. We are passionate about changing the world with science and software, and we are looking for exceptional people to join us in that mission.

As the Managing Principal on the Controls and Electrical Engineering team, you will be responsible for defining the Controls architecture for the robotic systems produced by Vicarious. This includes selecting, specifying, and designing the hardware solutions along with architecting and documenting the software interfaces and communication pathways between robots, automation components, cell-level and line-level safety systems, and the custom Vicarious AI software stack. You will manage a small team of experienced Controls Engineers, ensuring consistent design practices and managing team workload across multiple projects.

Key responsibilities for this position include early involvement in project planning, charting the Controls and Electronics approach for each development effort and scoping resources and time needed. You will work closely with cross-functional teams within the HW Engineering team as well as the SW Teams to design, validate, and finally roll-out equipment for deployment. The ideal candidate will have experience working with projects at all lifecycle phases from early concept through production ramp, and will be comfortable working closely with Systems Integration teams, Software Engineers and AI Researchers to bring Vicarious components from initial design through prototype development and finally into full production.

What you'll do

  • Architect modular and expandable controls systems to enable scalable ongoing development and deployment of Vicarious robotic system products
  • Design systems compliant with ISO13949/NFPA79/NEC/UL508A, and create electrical, pneumatic and fluid schematics

  • Participate in initial project conceptual development and guide project planning with respect to Controls team technical approach, development effort required, system cost, prototype and production estimated procurement timelines
  • Architect, write and debug PLC code with an emphasis on generating code that is organized, structured, documented, maintainable and reusable. Set up team processes which ensure good code development practices. PLC code will interact with subsystems such as conveyors, robots, LabView, machine vision, and 3rd party equipment.

  • Design ANSI/RIA15.06/OSHA compliant control safety systems for reliably safeguarding robots, conveyors, and other high volume manufacturing equipment, and participate in system Risk Analysis activities

  • Select and size electrical and electromechanical components such as servos

  • Debug and optimize automated processes to maximize cycle time, improve availability and yield

  • Guide Controls team technical development, providing mentoring and coaching along with career development

What we look for

  • BS Electrical Engineering (or equivalent – Majors in Controls and Computer Control Systems, Mechatronic Engineering, Automation Engineering, etc.)
  • 10+ years of experience as a hands-on Controls Engineer or Robotics Engineer working on automation and/or electromechanical systems.
  • Experience managing small teams of engineers
  • Experience architecting controls systems
  • Expert at process integration and electromechanical/mechatronic systems
  • Knowledge of Electrical Standards (NFPA79, National Electric Code, UL508A).
  • In-depth knowledge of Safety standards (ANSI/RIA15.06, OSHA).
  • Advanced proficiency programming industrial equipment
  • Experience with multiple PLC platforms (B&R, Beckhoff, Allen Bradley, Siemens)(Beckhoff and B&R controllers)
  • Text-based programming (C,C++, Python)
  • Human Machine Interface (HMI / GUI) experience
  • Field bus Networks (EtherCAT, ProfiNet, Powerlink, OpenSafety, Safety rated field bus networks)
  • Serial communication (RS-232) between PLCs and instruments
  • Ethernet communications between machine PLCs and database systems, experience with OPC-UA
  • Demonstrated excellence in programming PLCs. Must have a well-defined methodology for maintaining code structure and organization. Ability to program state machines for complex processes that involve multi-station parallel processing, pick and place automation, data acquisition, and PID control. Proven ability to design fault-tolerant systems with error handling and recovery

Nice to have's

  • MS Electrical Engineering (or equivalent – Majors in Controls and Computer Control Systems, Mechatronic Engineering, Automation Engineering, etc.)
  • Experience programming Articulated robots is highly desired (UR, Kuka, etc)
  • Proficiency selecting appropriate circuit protectors, wire and cable, sensors, safety hardware, PLC hardware, remote I/O, VFD and servo systems
  • Proficiency in creating detailed schematics in CAD (AutoCAD preferred)
  • Proficiency programming and tuning variable frequency drives
