The mission of this role is to manage, mentor, and grow the capabilities of the Vicarious in-house mechanical engineering team. The Vicarious mechanical engineering team is responsible for specification, design, release, and test of custom hardware modules within the Vicarious product platform. The mechanical engineering manager is responsible for ensuring team resources (people, SW tools, HW test assets) are adequate to meet the needs of ongoing parallel development projects by maintaining development schedules and driving task management and common processes among the mechanical engineering team.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in mechanical engineering design and development, the ability to act as a coach and technical mentor for the team, and strong project management and communication skills. 

What you'll do

  • Establish and maintain mechanical engineering processes including design reviews, documentation templates, team development schedules, task management, and meetings
  • Collaborate with project management to establish hardware design and development plans and ensure adequate resource support for ongoing projects
  • Manage direct reports: 4-6 mechanical engineers
  • Provide technical input and direction on detailed mechanical designs, new project technical feasibility, and technical and schedule risks
  • Be an active member of a startup environment, with an all-hands-on-deck attitude as we grow the HW and Operations teams. This will mean pitching in to help with detailed design, sourcing, building, testing and documentation. 

Who you are

  • Earned a Bachelors or Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, or other related field with additional mechanical engineering design experience
  • Have 2+ years of team management experience
  • Experienced designing robotic systems, automation, or complex machinery
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of mechanical, electromechanical, controls, and SW systems
  • Experienced with CAD design tools, mechanical drafting, GD&T
  • Experienced with product development lifecycle management and change orders
  • Able to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Possess excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of industrial robotics standards is a plus
