OUR TEAM
The Whistle Server Engineering team is a group of engineers responsible for managing and maintaining a critical component of our backend infrastructure. Our goal is to help everyone pet parent like a pro by providing outstanding solutions to big data and IoT connectivity challenges, facilitating internal and external partnerships, and providing APIs to various client side applications.
HOW YOU’LL HELP EVERYONE PET PARENT LIKE A PRO
As the Sr. Software Engineer of the Whistle server team, you will be working at a fast paced agile
environment that is responsible for managing and scaling a core backend component of our distributed
systems platform. In this role, you will:
- Lead features from start to finish defining requirements, scheduling, development, and deployment.
- Mentor team members and help them excel at work
- Manage server releases and pull requests using Git and Github
- Maintain existing and new software design patterns to improve software consistency, maintainability, and quality
- Design and implement RESTful APIs for mobile clients and IoT devices
- Work with big data and help improve our data processing pipelines
- This role will be working closely with our product, mobile, firmware, and DevOps teams and collaborate with our cross-brands such as Wisdom Panel, Pet Insight Project, and Vet Insight.

TECHNICAL SKILLS:
- 5+ years of professional experience as a Ruby on Rails developer designing, implementing, and delivering scalable and well tested solutions
- 2+ years of experience writing JavaScript and NodeJS applications
- Experience working with large scale distributed systems
- Fluent knowledge of software design and enterprise integration patterns as well as object oriented and functional programming paradigms
- Extensive experience developing RESTful APIs and complete understanding of ROA style architectures
- Working knowledge of CI/CD DevOps practices, GitHub, containers/orchestration tools such as Docker and Kubernetes, and Infrastructure-as-Code
- Experience with relational database engines, SQL (Structured Query Language), query optimization techniques, and data modeling.
- Ability to coach team members
- A passion for testing and driving code through testing patterns
- Knowledge of common application architectures such as clean architecture (Onion View), SOA, or Event Sourcing is a plus
- Experience writing Python or Elixir applications is a plus
- IoT and consumer electronics experience is a plus
