As the manager of Coinbase Cloud Infrastructure, you will lead all aspects of providing our software engineering teams with scalable, paved road infrastructure solutions. You will be responsible for cross-organizational and functional collaboration, understanding and satisfying the infrastructure needs of many teams, and building self-service patterns to satisfy those needs at scale. You will provide forward looking roadmaps, generate strategy for your teams to meet company business needs, advocate for and attain staffing and budget, and provide tactical direction as we continue to expand and establish new infrastructure engineering teams at Coinbase Cloud.
What you'll be doing (ie. job duties):
- Decompose our singular, widely focused Infrastructure team into an Infrastructure organization with smaller, more functionally focused teams, each with their own managers.
- Mentor your direct reports to have a positive impact on the organization and chart an exciting career path.
- Collaborate with engineers, designers, product managers, and senior leadership to turn our vision into a tangible roadmap we can implement together every quarter.
- Collaborate with Product and Engineering to break down sophisticated projects into infrastructure standards and methodologies, laying the foundation for scalable operations.
- Be a thoughtful technical voice and support all Coinbase engineers in making diligent architectural decisions—then bring about the adoption of these decisions.
- Work with our talent organization to source and hire outstanding engineers and managers who will expand the Coinbase culture and product.
- Contribute to owning and delivering processes that drive engineering quality and meet our engineering SLAs.
What we look for in your (ie. job requirements):
- At least 10 years of combined experience in backend software or infrastructure architecture.
- At least 5 years of engineering management experience.
- Experience with Kubernetes or similar container orchestration platforms.
- Strong understanding of at least one major cloud provider (AWS, GCP, Azure, or equivalent).
- Experience with at least one popular form of Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, Pulumi, or equivalent)
- Execution-focused with an ability to navigate ambiguity while thinking about the long term and addressing the short term.
- Proficiency recognizing architectural and software anti-patterns, and effective steering of engineers away from implementing them at scale.
- Strong interpersonal skills working with managers and individual contributors ranging from those just starting their careers all the way to those at the executive level.
- Experience crafting, delivering, and operating multi-tenant, distributed systems at scale.
- Read, write, and speak in English.
Nice to have:
We value strong technical leaders! We want to hear your opinions on secure, scalable architecture and technical implementation. We are elated when we see experience operating Kubernetes clusters at scale, an understanding of multi-cloud environments, or experience in Go and/or Terraform. We are a security-first organization, so any experience working in a SOC 1 or SOC 2 environment is also helpful.
