We are looking for an experienced Field Safety Investigator to join our Safety and Systems team in ensuring the safety of our autonomous vehicle fleet testing and operations. As part of the Operational Safety department at Cruise, the Field Safety Investigator will support day-to-day fleet operations safety and major company initiatives by ensuring continuous improvement through analysis of our field data and risks. 

In this position, you will collaborate cross-functionally with Engineering, Operations, Product Safety, Security, Government Affairs, Legal and other teams in order to build and execute on a world-class systems safety risk management process in line with our company’s overall commitment to creating a safer world through autonomous vehicles.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Lead investigations into employee reported safety concerns, near misses, and events from the operating fleet, you will be the Operational Safety point person for Incident Response and responsible for root cause analysis, and generating findings and resolution actions from post-mortem activities
  • Utilizing Safety Management Systems, you will drive organization level decisions supported by quantitative safety analysis of field safety information, to identify and assess trends affecting safety
  • Work with teams across Cruise to develop solutions to continuously improve safety and determine short and long-term corrective and preventive actions to address investigation findings.
  • Partner with Government Affairs and Legal teams to prepare data for regulatory reporting and responses to governmental investigations and legal claims related to our fleet.
  • Participate in program audits to ensure effective traceability and readiness for internal and external reviews.
  • Promote safety culture at Cruise and contribute to our Safety Management System including leading efforts to expand on our incident investigation and associated risk management programs

What you must have:

  • Education and/or equivalent years of experience (must have education listed for US immigration work visa eligibility assessment)
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical degree and 5+ years work experience
  • Hands-on experience with field safety in the form of accident reconstruction, failure analysis, and/or automotive defect investigation
  • Analytical proficiency demonstrated through experience in extracting insights from and utilizing expert-provided data in the form of quantitative risk assessment, reliability analysis, and/or statistical data analysis
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Self motivated and ability to network internally

Bonus points!

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in engineering or a related technical field
  • Familiarity with Systems Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA), Causal Analysis using System Theory (CAST), Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS) or similar frameworks within a technical environment
  • Expertise in safety analysis for autonomous vehicles or similar industry
  • Experience in evaluating and ensuring regulatory compliance through auditing
  • Familiarity with product safety and liability
  • Experience interacting with regulators
