The Role

We are seeking an experienced and driven power electronics architect to lead development of a market leading hybrid inverter through all stages of development. As the power electronics architect, you will rely on your past experience bringing converters to market to lead Span’s develop a state of the art power electronics package that pairs with the Span Panel. Further, you will be tasked with finding a team to support the development of this exciting product.

In this role, you will:

  • Define system architecture and create engineering requirements for power electronics converter for use in residential solar and battery storage applications.

  • Own full product lifecycle: specification, design, prototype, certification, reliability, validation, and manufacturing.

  • Collaborate with mechanical, electronics design, and firmware engineering teams to successfully to design, validate and manufacture power converters.

  • Architect and model of power converters.

  • Collaborate with internal and external teams.

  • Build prototype components and assemblies.

  • Develop and perform tests related to compliance, environmental, and reliability.

  • Work with contract manufacturers to have parts made to specification, to improve quality, and to improve yield.

  • Work with Mechanical team to design a thermal management strategy

  • Build a resource plan and timeline for power electronics development.

 

About You

Required Qualifications

We are seeking a seasoned electrical engineer who has:

  • MS in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Power Electronics

  • 5+ years experience developing bi-directional power converter (AC/DC, DC/DC & DC/AC) design.

  • Experience with high voltage power semiconductor selection (Si/SiC/GaN MOSFETs, diodes), gate drive and protection circuit design.

  • Hands-on approach whether it be building a prototype or performing testing.

  • Experience leading projects and architecture with diverse team under tight timelines.

  • Solid understanding of the theory and application of magnetics (inductors, transformers) and capacitors (Electrolytic, film and Ceramic) used for power conversion.

  • Familiar with schematic capture and power converter circuit modeling/simulation tools.

  • Experience in supervision of PCB layout for minimal stray inductance and capacitance, placement strategies for better manufacturability, power/signal plane definition and EMC optimization.

  • Knowledge of basic control theory.

  • Experience with embedded programming including working with / guiding firmware developers.

  • Experience working closely with contract manufacturers and leading design for manufacturing.

  • Proficiency with basic EE tools (Oscilloscopes, Signal Generators etc.).

  • Experience in ground-up architecture and design ownership for designs with power levels in the 5-30kW range and voltages in the 200-600V range

Bonus Qualifications

We would love to hire someone who has:

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Power Electronics.

  • Knowledge in environmental, reliability, and safety requirements for residential applications.

  • Experience specifying embedded controllers for power electronics – i.e. choosing between FPGA, microcontroller, hardware accelerated gate drive, etc.

  • Knowledge of national and international safety and EMC requirements relevant to the design of power converters such as UL, FCC, National Electric Code(NEC), IEC, and ISO.

  • Experience developing a solar inverter, battery inverter, or electric vehicle charging equipment.

  • Demonstrated success working in a cross disciplinary, multi-cultural environment.

  • Experience developing of performance validation, environmental testing, and reliability testing.
