OUR ENGINEERING TEAM

Each month, millions of customers use our web and native apps (powered by our custom e-commerce backend) to help make better decisions about the products they use in their homes. We work in full-stack Agile product teams to cultivate autonomy, collaboration, and speed. We build in a modern, evolving stack (Python, Django, PostGres, Vue, Redis, Kubernetes, AWS, Swift, Kotlin, Java), using new technologies as needed. Our CI/CD pipelines make sure we get to production several times a day, and understand the impact of our work. Our strong unit test suites (well...only medium-strong on the front-end) and end-to-end Selenium and Cypress tests let us refactor and release with certainty. We operate with shared trust and enjoy being 'in this together' to meet the challenges of a scaling business.

THE ROLE

As a senior back-end software engineer in Core Services, you will have a hand in architecting the services and technologies that enable Grove’s internal departments and teams. You will join a team of world-class, highly motivated software engineers to deliver highly impactful systems supporting Grove’s operations and in particular payments, shipments, orders and ERP related systems. We’re growing incredibly fast and need maintainable and scalable technologies to power our website and applications. You’ll help make practical, deliberate decisions about which technologies to adopt (our current stack is Python, Django, PostGres, Javascript, Vue, AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, Stripe, Celery, Flask, Redis, Memcache, Redshift, Java, Scala and more) and make sure the team stays informed, happy, and productive as the services and architecture evolves. You will also be instrumental in designing and implementing the next generation of our back-end systems to support fulfillment, finance, customer and order management and so much more. HQ is in San Francisco and while everyone is currently working from home this role will not be permanently remote.

YOUR IMPACT

  • Make mature and thoughtful decisions to move our systems forward at a speed that supports our growth
  • Help implement high quality services.
  • Contribute insights, share information, and train other engineers on best practices and techniques for high-quality development
  • Analyze issues and new cases. Report and communicate status to all stakeholders across the company.
  • Work with engineering leadership to create a platform technology roadmap and deliver against it
  • Share ideas to implement features and demonstrate best practices
  • Advocate for new and better ways we should develop, and discover and implement new best practices for the development organization
  • Contribute back to the open source projects we rely on
  • Please note this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee of this job. Duties, responsibilities and activities may change at any time with or without notice.

ABOUT YOU

  • 5+ years of strong back-end services implementation, with Python development experience
  • Good understanding of Python, Django, backend architecture, service design and creating scalable patterns to match our growth
  • In depth work with storage (SQL, noSQL databases) and caching (Memcache, Redis, other) technologies.
  • Exposure to javascript, ECMAScript standard, Vue or React and web front-end developments.
  • Experience with payment and financial systems is a plus.
  • You love clean code and robust design
  • You understand the software life-cycle.
  • You enjoy mentoring and leading projects.
  • You value and take responsibility for the quality of your features, including writing your own tests (unit, functional and integration) and reviewing your teammates’ code
  • Keen nose for bad code smells
  • Motivated in learning and helping your team be successful
  • Innovator with good ideas, strong problem-solving abilities, and a results-oriented attitude

BENEFITS

  • Comprehensive healthcare plans
  • Unlimited PTO and paid family leave
  • Home office stipend while remote
