Unity reaches the world on over a billion devices, from entry-level mobile phones to the high-end consoles and to do so the runtime needs to be high performance and scalable. The DOTS Runtime Team is responsible for a completely new runtime utilizing high performance C#, Burst, and Unity's Data-oriented Technology Stack to bring Unity to new platforms where the full Unity Engine is too heavy weight. Our goal is to enable best in-class hardware usage and optimizations that can scale from tiny games running on the web or wearable devices, to large scale AAA experiences.

You would be working on a brand-new, modularized architecture based around data-oriented design principles where scalability lives alongside performance. Areas of focus would include jobs, memory, common language runtime, IO, build, and game update-loop. Your system engineering experience would influence the engine architecture. And you would have an opportunity to work on compiler runtime performance and build size optimizations, data design best practices and other technology innovations to enable scalable game experiences to many platforms at Unity.

You have experienced the practical challenges of developing and shipping games. You have ideas and opinions on low-level systems design and engine architecture but you’re willing to work with others to build consensus around your designs. You want the opportunity to experiment and implement these ideas and guide the development of Unity’s new data-oriented runtime and tools.

Responsibilities

  • Democratize data oriented programming in the Unity game engine
  • Take ownership of core system architecture and features from conception to shipping
  • Profile, optimize and debug code on a unique technology stack
  • Work closely with feature teams and early adopter game developers to help them succeed

Requirements

  • Good experience of systems engineering
  • C/C++ or C# experience, in addition to a scripting language
  • Passion for optimization, code analysis, and debugging tools
  • Ability to quickly adapt to new technologies and tasks
  • Experience supporting multiple platforms such as iOS, Android, Mac, Windows, and Linux
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to build relationships with global stakeholders

Bonus Points

  • Experience with Unity Engine
  • Game or engine development background
  • WebGL and WASM experience
