We’re Cruise, the self-driving ride-hailing service.

We are building the world’s most advanced self-driving vehicles to safely connect people to the places, things, and experiences they care about. We believe self-driving vehicles will help save lives, reshape cities, give back time in transit, and restore freedom of movement for many.

At Cruise, our engineers have opportunities to grow and develop while learning from leaders at the cutting-edge of their fields. With a culture of internal mobility, there's opportunity to thrive in a variety of disciplines. This is a place for dreamers and doers to succeed.

If you are looking to solve one of today’s most complex engineering challenges, see the results of your work in hundreds of self-driving cars, and make a positive impact in the world starting in our cities, join us.

We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer who has a passion for full-stack C++ development on a very high visibility critical path project. This engineering’s day-to-day would be to write native code and Linux applications that will live on our multi carrier telematics module, which enables LTE communication from the AV to the outside world. You'll be building a new platform that defines the future of vehicle connectivity in a driverless world.

The Vehicle Communication team develops the first layers of software on the car, from interfacing with hardware to moving large amounts of data up the software stack. As a Senior C++ Software Engineer you’ll be responsible for designing, documenting, and implementing complex, highly scalable, low-latency software in C++ on Linux-based systems. Your work will be the foundational software on which the rest of Cruise builds upon.

What you'll be doing:

  • Invent, extend, design and implement the underlying communication platform that keeps our AVs connected while on the road
  • Write reliable, scalable and high-performance software in C++
  • Test and validate your software through unit and integration tests, simulations, and analysis of on-road performance
  • Collaborate closely with members of adjacent teams on joint, high-impact projects that have C-suite visibility
  • Develop low latency, high throughput code to enable direct streaming of audio and video between the AV and the Cruise back office.
  • Thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative work environment where immediate impact is a result of your efforts and where your contributions are highly visible
  • Embody Cruise behaviors: Stay Safe, Own It, Stay Focused, Seek Truth, Work Together, Be Humble

What you must have:

  • 5+ years Software Engineering experience in embedded systems
  • Solid expertise in C & C++ and demonstrated experience in low level network programming
  • Experience with Real Time Operating Systems (RTOS) and packet level network programming
  • Working knowledge of computer architecture with emphasis on the HW/SW interfaces
  • Strategic planning and testing across multiple divisions, teams, and products
  • Unix/Linux kernel development experience
  • Debug system level issue in C++ and hardware components in the areas of networking performance, wireless coexistence and RF performance
  • Experience architecting and developing frameworks from scratch
  • Understanding of wireless protocols
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Experience with video codecs like MPEG2/4, H264/AVC, HEVC, etc. is a plus
  • Knowledge of WebRTC is a plus

Bonus points!

  • Familiarity with backend technologies and how to interface with them. Backend development experience in Node.js, Python, etc.
  • Opinionated about products, with good user experience instincts
  • Experience developing on and for embedded Linux / POSIX systems
  • Experience with safety critical development (FDA, FAA, Automotive)
  • Experience with embedded build systems, such as buildroot or yocto
  • Experience with networking
  • Experience with ROS or other robotics middleware platforms
  • Experience with other languages: C, Python, Bash, Go
  • Experience with QNX, VxWorks, or similar
