Come Build Robots

At Ouster, we're developing advanced sensor hardware and vision algorithms for autonomous cars and drones. We're looking for software and hardware engineers interested in working on the systems that underpin modern robotics: high performance sensors, localization, mapping, object detection, tracking and classification. Our team is composed of engineers that wear many hats and enjoy building robots that cope with the messiness of the real world. All of us push code, some of us build hardware, and none of us wants to wait another decade for cars and drones to be driving themselves.

Ouster is looking for a Senior/Principal LIDAR Performance Validation Engineer to help us develop performance validation strategies and Test infrastructure for Ouster Products.

This role will form the strong core of a new Industry-leading Optical Performance Validation Team reporting to the Quality and Reliability Director. You will grow with us as Ouster grows, be tasked with leading the development and execution of complex Performance Validation test strategies of Ouster LIDAR sensors, and analyzing the results using sophisticated analytical tools. Key elements of the role are:

  • Design Validation of the quoted optical, ranging performance etc. of the LIDAR in the presence of real-world impediments such as Rain, fog, crosstalk etc. over the full environmental operating envelop.
  • Coordinating and reviewing benchmarking tests by outside Test organizations.
  • Design and deployment of comprehensive LIDAR performance test systems at Ouster and strengthening our in-house performance test capability
  • Providing a Technical performance interface to large customers and involvement in the real-world application of LIDAR sensors.
  • Assist integration teams for major customers etc.
  • Strong collaboration with Engineering to resolve test failures and point out potential design improvements

Coordinating Internal and External test resources, developing a comprehensive LIDAR Test capability and strong collaboration with Engineering to resolve test failures and point out potential design improvements are key aspects of your role. We’d love to have your passion for Optical Performance Validation Testing to help us to field industry leading products with world class Quality and Reliability. This is not a manufacturing Test role.

For this you will need to possess the following:

  • An advanced degree in Optical Engineering, or related fields: PhD or Masters degree with applicable Industry experience
  • 10 + years in the field of Optical Design and /or Validation.
  • Self-driven and innovative approach to commensurate with a Start-up environment
  • Experience in the field of Optical Sensors, Cameras etc.
  • Automotive/LIDAR/Radar Sensor Validation experience a definite plus
  • Modelling of Components and Systems using packages/tools such as FTDT, Zemax, Light Tools, etc. Matlab
  • Strong multi-disciplinary research, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to effectively co-ordinate multiple test activities occurring both in-house and at outside organizations
  • Some Python programming experience
  • Strong Communication and Collaboration skills
