At Standard Cognition, we’re rethinking the way retail works. We are enabling autonomous checkout for brick & mortar retailers with our AI-powered computer vision platform. Since launching in November 2017, Standard has contracts with multiple global retailers and is in the process of deploying our Standard Checkout solution across thousands of stores globally. We announced our Series A in November 2018 and we’re backed by some of Silicon Valley’s leading investors including CRV, Initialized, Draper Associates and YCombinator. We announced our Series B in July 2019.

We are looking for experienced engineers with a focus on operational improvement. Your time spent in the mines of hardware tech support, network troubleshooting, packaging dependency resolution hell, this year’s hip metrics collection system, and/or configuration management systems advise your decisions now that it’s your turn to design what the next generation of tooling looks like. You’re opinionated about technology and related process but you know that you’ve been dead wrong before. You know that good enough and delivered is better than perfect vaporware. You know that the technical operations game is to get and stay ahead of reactive work with proactive projects but know that crap happens sometimes.

You’ll work on metrics & monitoring, provisioning & packaging, authn & authz, tooling & time synchronization, scaling & security for cloud hosted and globally distributed physical infrastructure. You’ll spend time teaching developers by example how to build robust, reliable software. You’ll write tools to automate every conceivable repetitive process you encounter. You’ll make the task of building, deploying, running, and monitoring software & hardware as smooth and boring as possible in order to maximize the amount of time you have for other pursuits.

This is a full time role. We're open to San Francisco based or remote candidates.

What you'll do here:

  • Automate, automate, automate!
  • Continually refine provisioning and release processes.
  • Continuously improve metrics, monitoring, and alerting of systems, applications, and stacks.
  • Build pipelines to maximize automation for CI as well as data ingestion to AI training and models.
  • Analyze performance of cloud and physical infrastructure and make recommendations.
  • Design tools and implement tools for yourself, your team, and developers.
  • Review others’ designs and implementation for security, performance, and feature completeness.
  • Respond to production incidents.

Who you are:

  • You have 8+ years of experience as an infrastructure/reliability/software engineer supporting mission critical infrastructure services.
  • You value distributed teams. Our SRE team is one of the most distributed in the company, so working collaboratively with folks who aren't in the same city is a must.
  • You are experienced with the software development lifecycle: pull requests, code reviews, and continuous integration suites.
  • You have experience with metrics and monitoring tools like Prometheus, Grafana, Stackdriver, and SumoLogic.
  • You have a solid working knowledge of networking, security, automation, performance analysis, and systems programming.
  • You have experience participating in on-call rotations, optimizing alerting signal to noise ratios, and participating in retrospectives.
  • You have experience with infrastructure-as-code frameworks such as Chef, Puppet, Ansible and Terraform.
  • You know Python, golang, and bash and you aren’t afraid to use them.
  • Only meet some of these traits or experiences? We'd still love to hear from you!

Why you might want to work with us:

  • We take care of you and your family with health, vision, and dental insurance.
  • We're serious about food. Free catered lunch every day, and a fully stocked kitchen with occasional snack appearances from our Japanese office. Healthy and not-so-healthy options are available, as are foods for those with dietary restrictions.
  • You're excited to work on a product that will impact almost any consumer, almost anywhere.
  • We dress casually. If you want, you can wear slippers in the office. You should see the creative collection our team has built.
  • We believe in a culture of learning, and want to keep building our skills, experiences, and capabilities.
  • We offer flexible work schedules. We trust our team to know how they will do their best work.
  • We're family friendly. We want our teammates to focus on what they need to when they need to.
  • We offer very competitive compensation, including equity in Standard, to each one of our employees.

Standard provides equal employment opportunities (EEO) to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, genetics, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. We are committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce and welcome people from all backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and abilities.
