Software Engineer, Full Stack (Growth)
The opportunity
Grammarly empowers people to thrive and connect whenever and wherever they communicate. More than 20 million people around the world use our AI-powered writing assistant every day. All of this begins with our team collaborating in a values-driven and learning-oriented environment.
To achieve our ambitious goals, we’re looking for an exceptional and experienced Full-Stack Software Engineer to brainstorm and implement growth-related experiments and to drive implementation of new back-end infrastructure. This role will join the Growth team, which is in charge of the infrastructure behind our main website funnel (grammarly.com), various blogs (grammarly.com/blog), email infrastructure responsible for both transactional and marketing emails, and user account hub. We’re looking for someone to continuously evolve these services as business grows and build new ones that can support further growth.
Grammarly’s engineers and researchers have the freedom to innovate and uncover breakthroughs—and, in turn, influence our product roadmap. The complexity of our technical challenges is growing rapidly as we scale our interfaces, algorithms, and infrastructure. Read more about our stack or hear from our team on our technical blog.
Your impact
As a Full-Stack Software Engineer on the Growth team, you’ll be able to make a significant impact on new user acquisition. You will design, develop, debug, troubleshoot, optimize, and release back-end and front-end features or new infrastructure based on business goals. We expect our engineers to assess and recommend ways to improve the building, testing, and deployment processes for the entire stack. This person will work very closely with product and marketing managers, designers, and data scientists, as well as other engineers, to incorporate growth-related ideas into functioning code in a fast-paced environment.
In this role you will:
- Work on projects that directly impact key business metrics.
- Execute on growth-related ideas that cut across team boundaries and involve working on the full stack. We use Java and Scala on the back-end and React/TypeScript on the front-end.
- Provide effective code reviews.
- Help improve the development, testing, and release processes for both back-end and frontend.
- Prepare a plan to consistently achieve results and execute against a timeline with predictability.
- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership when faced with challenging or ambiguous situations.
We’re looking for someone who
- Embodies our EAGER values—is ethical, adaptable, gritty, empathetic, and remarkable.
- Has at least 5 years of experience in full-stack programming with expert knowledge of Java, Scala, or other statically typed compiled languages in the context of building back-end systems and web servers.
- Is excited to work in Java/Scala on the back-end and React/TypeScript on the front-end even if coming from a different code background.
- Has experience working with streaming platforms like Apache Kafka or RabbitMQ.
- Might have a preference for back-end work but can easily jump on a front-end project when needed.
- Can learn a new codebase quickly and get excited about contributing to the codebases of other teams.
- Has experience working on fast-paced teams.
Bonus points for
- Knowledge of AWS product offerings, including databases, load balancers, and streaming services.
- Experience with Terraform.
- Having worked on data pipelines using Spark and Airflow.
- Experience working with email service providers.
- Experience running experiments or A/B tests to test various product hypotheses.
