Software Engineer, Ph.D.
Meraki was founded by Ph.D. students from MIT. Our culture and product development philosophy is influenced by our academic roots. We’re looking to hire Ph.D.s that want to balance technical freedom and exploration with the desire to see their work used by the customers and end-users every day.
Meraki has technical challenges at every level of the stack. From new wireless protocols and optimizing network performance, to building large-scale distributed systems that can handle exponential growth, Meraki has challenges across a wide range of technologies, many outside of core networking.
Examples of the systems we've built/worked on include:
- A secure, resilient overlay network that allows our backend to deliver configurations and gather statistics from our devices despite Internet routing anomalies and middleboxes.
- Implementing a scalable, distributed wireless roaming feature to seamlessly hand off client connections between access points in large campus deployments.
- Virtualizing our security appliance firmware, and then building out a testbed of thousands of virtual appliances (each with simulated clients behind them) for scale testing our products.
- A custom database, written from scratch in C++, that processes over 1 million writes/second and intelligently partitions statistics data on disk for fast retrieval and efficient in-memory caching.
- We use a number of different programming languages and systems, deliberately choosing the right tools for each particular application. We write code in C++, Ruby, and Scala. We use Linux, PostgreSQL, Rails, Jetty, Click, nginx, and memcached. We contribute to several open source projects.
You are an ideal candidate if you:
- Ph.D in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent experience.
- Be a data nerd who enjoys the science in computer science.
- Have a passion for seeing their work used by millions of users.
- Know several programming languages, and appreciate each one for what it's best at.
- Have 5+ years of advanced programming skills in C and/or C++ for operating system kernel & systems development.
- Have strong systems and networking foundational knowledge (systems architecture, memory hierarchy, storage subsystems, LANs, routing).
Bonus points for:
- Knowledge of wireless protocols (e.g., 802.11r, 802.11v, 802.11r, Wi-Fi 6, 6E, Bluetooth, Zigbee, 4G).
- Deep understanding of wireless protocols and network security fundamentals.
- Experience building Cloud-based infrastructure and services (e.g. Web applications).
- Passion to lead, improve code, implement design patterns, best coding practices.
