About us

Weave Grid builds software to make it cheaper and safer for utilities to serve electric vehicles, add renewable energy resources, and save customers money. Our mission is to drive rapid decarbonization in the global transport and power sectors by intelligently connecting electric vehicles to the grid.

We are currently in market with early utility clients, and we must rapidly build and deliver product improvements to serve existing customers and win new deals from our deep pipeline. As a rapidly growing company, we are building a thoughtful, capable team that can adapt with our rapidly evolving circumstances.

Industry context We are living through historic changes in the ways people use transportation - a sector that is now one of the largest and fastest-growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions.

Electric vehicle (EV) sales are growing at over 60% a year, with vehicle manufacturers spending billions to get ready for an electric future. Boston Consulting Group estimates EVs will account for over half of all vehicle sales by 2030. Electric utilities see massive opportunities in this transformation, as the rise of EVs could drive more growth in energy demand over the next 10 years than any decade since the 1950s.

Larger EV fleets can also help support renewable energy sources on the grid. But to accommodate growth in EVs, utilities will need to make substantial investments in infrastructure and technology. Weave Grid's software helps meet the challenge of our transition to electrified transport.

Job description

WeaveGrid is building a new enterprise SaaS application for our electric utility customers. This role is a key one for this initiative because this individual will be the first technical contributor and their decisions and leadership will be crucial to its success.

In the early days of the project, this role will consist largely of engineering design, technology selection, and hands-on development of the system. As the team grows, the position will likely grow in one of two directions: either as a technical lead for the application responsible for its overall quality and soundness, or as a team-level manager in charge of the application's ongoing development and delivery. In either case, there would be flexibility in how much time is spent hands on as the team matures.

Core Responsibilities

Work hand in hand with product lead and customer success managers to develop a roadmap and resourcing plan for a new enterprise SaaS application to serve electric utility customers

Lay the foundations for the core technical design of the system, including evaluating and deciding on key third-party dependencies

Serve as the security and compliance lead for the product on at least an interim basis (support and training will be provided as necessary)

Collaborate with other technical leaders to hire and onboard the remainder of the development team

Manage the day to day work of other software engineers as they are brought on to the utility applications team

About you

You are an experienced software engineer who enjoys both building and leading, and who recognizes the importance of both technical and interpersonal skills in producing great software. You have worked on enterprise SaaS products before, in an industry or market where compliance and risk management are significant factors in the software development process.

You have operated in both technical leadership and managerial capacities, though possibly on small projects or teams. You may prefer one over the other, but you are comfortable in both capacities as the needs of the team evolve.

In terms of languages, you've probably been through at least a couple generations of frontend JavaScript evolution; you likely have some React exposure, and you may be an experienced React hand. You may not have a ton of Python under your belt, but you have enough familiarity with the language and its ecosystem to incorporate Python backend services and components into a full stack application (with support from seasoned Python developers).

To meet the needs of this role, you will bring

Significant experience developing enterprise SaaS applications for large customers in a regulated industry environment

Comfort with basic software design decisions and architectural tradeoffs, including the evaluation and selection of programming frameworks, acquisition and integration of third-party libraries and services, and developer tool selection

Strong background in modern web development and JavaScript, including the ability to contribute to key library and tooling decisions

Some experience with React preferred

Expertise with backend Python sufficient to perform full-stack application design

Culture and mission Beyond your core skills and track record, you are someone who will expand the culture and cumulative wisdom of the team as a whole. This can take many forms - relevant past projects, hard-won perspective from personal history, an unusual or adjacent skillset, a motivating passion, and so on. We are whole individuals, not just functional role-fillers, and we value everything that you can bring to the team.

Finally, you should be strongly motivated by Weave Grid's mission. Energy and transportation expertise are not necessary, but it is important that you are passionate about tackling the climate crisis head on, by improving societal and environmental health.

Compensation and location

We are looking to fill this position as soon as possible. Compensation will include competitive salary, equity, and benefits. Weave Grid is based in San Francisco but is open to considering remote candidates in the US for some roles.
