Lob was built by technical co-founders with a vision to make the world programmable.

We offer two flagship APIs (print & mail and address verification) that enable companies to send postal mail as effortlessly as sending emails. Lob is venture-backed by the most reputable investors in tech, and we are rapidly growing our team to shape the future of our company and meet the demands of a quickly growing customer base and dynamic product offerings.

As a proud Pledge 1% company, we’re committed to leveraging our product, partnerships, and people to drive positive social impact through Lob.org, and are on a mission to make direct mail more sustainable.

We’re looking for an experienced DevOps engineer to help build Lob’s platform for our next stage of growth. You will have a profound impact on the engineering org’s strategy and culture, ensuring that people are able to move faster through technology. You’ll leverage existing technologies and bring some opinions of your own to the discussion to improve the engineering ecosystem. You will also be a source of coaching and mentoring for our team members and will help us to hire and retain a team of engaged and thriving engineers.

Some projects to get excited about:

  • Creating reusable patterns to simplify builds and releases
  • Consolidating deployment tooling and improving CI/CD capabilities
  • Delivering granular data retention tooling, creatively managing customer data across software products and services
  • Implementing edge services leveraging caching, authentication, and circuit breakers across the platform
  • Creating and maintaining reference architectures to launch production-ready services
  • Implementing distributed tracing and iterating on service observability
  • Collaborating with feature teams across the org to migrate container orchestrators, adopting and deploying with Hashicorp Nomad

As a Staff DevOps Engineer, you’ll...

  • Be responsible for leading projects from design to implementation
  • Coach and mentor other engineers on the team about best practices around platform architecture and general DevOps philosophy and implementation
  • Embed with other engineering teams to help adoption of new technologies, and contribute to solving complex problems spanning multiple domains
  • Work with engineering teams across the organization, improving tooling, process, internal developer experience, automation, and the entire engineering ecosystem
  • Collaborate in an inclusive, fun, learning-focused engineering culture that ships often

What you will bring to this role...

  • You have at least 5 years of overall experience as a DevOps engineer with platform experience around cloud services and observability
  • Shipped large, complex, business-impacting software projects for which you were the primary/lead technical designer or architect
  • Experience with one or more of the following languages: Javascript, GoLang, Elixir, Python
  • Experience with integrating one or more of the following technologies into architectures and best practices with them: Nomad, Terraform, Consul, Datadog, SNS/SQS, Redis, Postgres, Aurora, Lambda, etc
  • Experience with at least one public cloud vendor (AWS preferred)
  • Grown others around you through coaching, mentoring, and leading and can give examples of how you’ve done it
  • You’re Curious, Compassionate, Committed, and Passionate about your craft and can share that with others

Since great engineers come from a variety of backgrounds, it doesn’t particularly matter if you have a specific degree—we want to hear about your contributions in a real-world setting.

We offer remote working opportunities, unless otherwise described in the job description, in AZ, CA, CO, DC, GA, HI, IL, MA, MD, MI, MN, NC, NV, NH, NY, OH, OR, PA, TX, UT, and WA. You can also work onsite at our San Francisco headquarters.

If you are looking for a progressive, fun-spirited, and mentally stimulating environment, come join us at Lob!

We’re not just building a platform to make the world programmable. We’re also designing a great place to work, and a ground floor opportunity as an early member of the Lob team; you’ll directly shape the direction of our company.

An Insider's view of Lob

What’s the vibe like in the office?

The office is one of the things I miss the most. We truly love working with each other and are dedicated to our people and our business. I love how I am able to work from my desk, our "Lob-rary", the kitchen, or any of our soft seating! It is a space that encourages collaboration, community, and constant learning.

Laura

People Operations Specialist

How do you collaborate with other teams in the company?

Collaboration is a natural part of my job as a product manager - it takes a village to ship good software and I feel fortunate to do it with colleagues that are smart, and care deeply about our customers. Typically, I facilitate discussions over Zoom to integrate diverse perspectives so we can build good products that solve our customers' data need

Ayo

Senior Product Manager of Data

How has your career grown since starting at the company?

When I started at Lob I quickly met leaders and team members who were personally interested in mentoring me and helping me thrive at Lob. In my time with Lob, I've been able to level up and grow into a position I am truly passionate about. Through the support and encouragement of leadership, I am setting the building blocks for meaningful growth.

Dolly

People Operations Coordintor

How do you empower your team to be more creative?

To empower a creative approach to problem-solving, I encourage my team to start at the ideal outcome and reverse engineer. The path back does not have to be linear and it is within their power to find the best way, each time. Instead of starting with “how has it been done before”, we instead embrace a mindset of “how can this be done now, better”.

Victoria

Vice President of People

How would you describe the company’s work-life balance?

I have tons of doctor appointments because I'm pregnant with identical twins. My team has also been completely supportive of me taking the time I need to take care of myself and my twins. The founders really care about their people - I'm excited to be at a company that not only provides maternity time (16 weeks!), but actually encourages taking it.

Senior Software Engineer, Core Services
