The Role

Our Systems team is responsible for tying together the concurrent efforts at Span into a product that works with flawless consistency. Our team drives systems architecture, does systems integration, root causes problems, and builds internal infrastructure to support all these roles. As our first dedicated systems integration engineer, your responsibility will be to own the integration between the Span Panel and our growing list of technology partners.

As our systems integration lead, you will become our in-house expert on how the inverters we integrate with work, from power electronics to firmware; how our panel integrates with them; and be the engineering face of Span to each of the companies we work with.

Responsibilities

  • Design and validate integrations between the Span Panel and multiple solar inverters and batteries
  • Run functional test and characterization for the Span Panel (response times, accuracy, slew rate)
  • Use fleet data to monitor device health in the field and solve problems
  • Reproduce and root-cause issues from the field; work with the team to develop and try out fixes
  • Build test fixtures & hardware in the Span lab
  • Hack product hardware into low-cost test actuators and instrumentation

As we are a startup, this list should be considered neither exhaustive nor complete. We are excited for people to explore responsibilities outside their normal areas of expertise if the need or interest arises.

About You

 Required Qualifications

  • Extensive hands-on experience with energy storage and/or solar inverter hardware (testing, firmware/hardware development, or systems integration)
  • Strong understanding of electromagnetism, power electronics, and electrical engineering fundamentals
  • Good programming skills in Python, C, or related languages
  • Extensive hands-on lab skills: soldering, wiring, using oscilloscope and other instrumentation
  • Ability to understand and explain complex problems simply and effectively
  • A hacker’s instinct for making things work

Bonus Qualifications

  • Experience with embedded firmware development, particularly C/STM32/FreeRTOS
  • Experience with PCBA design (Altium, KiCAD)
