About the role
We’re looking for a strategic and agile leader to lead Chime’s accounting organization. This position will lead a world-class team that not only ensures timely, accurate and compliant financial processes and reporting but also plays a pivotal role in driving financial performance, surfacing actionable insights and enabling the company to scale. The Controller will be responsible for directing the financial reporting for internal and external requirements and leading the internal control framework and risk management processes that ensure Chime has IPO-ready financial controls in place. A successful candidate will be able to develop trusted relationships with key leaders across the organization, will become the go-to on a wide range of subjects by immersing themselves into details of Chime’s business, and will be a key contributor to strategic company-level decisions. This role reports to CFO and sits on the CFO’s leadership team.
Responsibilities
- Hire, lead and develop a high-performance, high-integrity accounting team
- Oversee the timely preparation and review of financial statements in compliance with US GAAP reporting standards
- Interpret, develop, implement, and monitor all accounting policies, processes, and procedures. Provide counsel on accounting-related issues, disclosure obligations related to business transactions and financial statements.
- Ensure compliance with all policies and requirements and provide accurate, timely, and useful management reports. Ensure strong internal controls are developed, implemented and maintained. Partner with Information Technology to ensure the technical infrastructure supporting financial reporting are designed to meet key control objectives and operate effectively.
- Implement new standards of control and governance to safeguard all assets, efficiently manage working capital and optimize restricted cash accounts at partner financial institutions; drive profitability through contract negotiation
- Develop the company’s internal control framework and oversee the successful completion of its first formal audit
- Oversee cash management and serve as a primary point of contact on commercial banking relationships
- Develop Chime’s corporate risk management policies; manage insurance policies and other corporate admin
- Manage the timely filing of all required tax returns and other statutory filings
- Own all stock administration and cap table management, including employee stock compensation, private company financing arrangements, 409a valuations and secondary transactions
- Partner closely with the People and Legal teams on human resources and employment-related matters
Requirements
- 15+ years of related accounting experience with 5+ years experience as a Controller at a high-growth pre-IPO startup; IPO and FinTech experience a strong plus
- CPA; Big 4 audit background
- Expert technical knowledge of US GAAP, SEC reporting, technical accounting, and SOX compliance
- Demonstrated leadership of a high functioning accounting organization and track record of driving strong financial performance
- Experience evolving processes, controls and systems to support a growth stage company
- Experience managing relationships with external auditors
- Excellent written and oral communication skills to effectively interact with Executive management and cross-functional teams; ability to explain complex or technical financial subjects to a non-technical audience
- Detail-oriented and fact-based communicator
