Controller

At Domino Data Lab, we have an ambitious vision for data science. Our platform helps data science teams accelerate research, increase collaboration, and rapidly deploy predictive models. Our customers are the most sophisticated analytical organizations in the world, including companies like Bristol Myers Squibb, Allstate, Bayer, and Red Hat. Backed by Sequoia Capital, Coatue Management, Bloomberg Beta, and Zetta Venture Partners, we are at the epicenter of the data science revolution, helping companies develop the next breakthrough in medicine, build better cars, or recommend the best song play next.
What We Are Building
The Finance team at Domino embodies a novel approach to people, processes, and technology. We’ve done away with the “old way” of doing things. Excel is great, but we have built an enterprise-grade financial system stack that gives us the freedom to do work that matters most paired with the flexibility to do it best. This team is as innovative as the company we are building.
What Your Impact Will Be
As a late-stage startup, Domino offers candidates for this role the opportunity to leave their mark on a rapidly scaling company. The level of impact and ownership that our employees experience is a unique opportunity to be a part of building something great from scratch.
Reporting to our CFO, the Controller will lead our Accounting function. As you look through the responsibilities below, you will see that we have a philosophical difference in terms of how Accounting should be done here at Domino. We cannot say that we believe the world is going to be model-driven without our teams operating this way as well.
Accounting at Domino will be software-driven, robotic-process automation driven, and eventually model-driven. When successful, the Accounting team will consistently close with a high level of fidelity in less than 5 days (we're at 5 days already) with a lean team while minimizing the menial tasks that drain the souls of many accounting teams with software (think emailing customers for collections). We will have the most efficient accounting team, bar none. This is not a role for everyone as it will require you to operate as a player/coach while managing a small team. Within 18-24 months, the role will shift towards public company readiness and the appropriate necessary staff build out.
If this intrigues you, come aboard as we execute our vision.
What Is the Job Like?
You will:
- Iterate to Excellence: Own, continuously iterate and optimize the day-to-day accounting functions, including deal desk, rev rec, AR, AP, international consolidations and monthly financial reporting.
- Streamline the Close: Don’t just manage but monitor and review the month-end closing process, help us streamline the process with software to ensure accurate and timely accounting records are maintained. Let’s get the close consistently 95% accuracy.
- Own the Outcome: Ensure the accuracy, and dimensionality of the general ledger, balance sheet reconciliations, and financial statements. The company depends on us for the insights within these financials.
- Win Together: Lead Domino’s small, but mightily software enabled, team of 3 (4 with you). Ensure development plans are built for each member of the team. Create the vision and mission for the team to execute on as we march towards IPO readiness.
- Institutionalize Improvements: Develop and maintain accounting principles, practices and procedures to ensure timely and accurate financial statements in accordance with accounting principles and company policies. Make it easy for others to understand how we do what we do.
- Exhibit Customer Devotion: Our customers are our fellow Dominoes. Ensure we provide human-centric tools, processes, and procedures to allow them to be as efficient as possible.
