About Our Role:

Reporting to the Corporate Controller, the Director of Accounting and Reporting is responsible for the global accounting, financial reporting and payroll functions of the Company. This role is both technical and operational in nature, will be hands on and offer the opportunity to work cross functionally with colleagues in Accounting Operations, Tax, Legal, Business Systems, Finance & Strategy, People and various other teams to ensure proper accounting treatment and accurate financial results. This position will be responsible for the close-the-books cycle, intercompany eliminations and consolidations, monthly and quarterly financial reporting both internally (management reporting) and externally (Board meetings, Investors, Audit), International statutory compliance, and other required and ad hoc financial reporting deliverables. Technical accounting focus areas will include: drafting accounting policies and memos, providing technical support to members of the Finance and Accounting team, ensuring proper accounting for our existing revenue streams (advertising and subscription-based offerings), accounting for new product offerings (from planning through launch), and accounting for business development deals and other projects or initiatives as needed. You will also be focused on financial statement classifications and new technical topics to ensure that our financial statements are in compliance with GAAP. This position will play a key leadership role in the Finance organization around process improvement, cross functional information sharing, streamlining the monthly close, implementing internal controls and mentorship of the accounting team members, all while supporting a business that is growing in scale and complexity. Responsibilities:

  • Directs and oversees global accounting teams, including general ledger and payroll with a focus on best in class internal controls and global process.
  • Reviews US GAAP consolidated financial statements, flux analysis for income statement, balance sheet, statement of cash flows and stockholders equity as well as various statistical analyses.
  • Support the Corporate Controller and Finance & Strategy team with the preparation of monthly and quarterly reporting packages to management and other periodic reporting as needed.
  • Act as a primary interface with the Company’s external auditors and coordinate the execution of quarterly and annual audits
  • Act as a primary interface with the Company’s third party providers for international statutory and local tax compliance and related auditors.
  • Responsible for maintaining global chart of accounts in partnership with Finance & Strategy and partner with Business Systems team to maintain related systems.
  • Lead the implementation of new accounting standards.
  • Partner with the Business Development and Product Development teams to stay ahead of new product launches or business development deals to assess the technical accounting implications and to ensure data will be available for accurate accounting.
  • Draft and maintain accounting policies for consistency and compliance with GAAP.
  • Research, evaluate, and document technical accounting implications of complex and non-standard transactions and participate in ad hoc projects requiring specialized accounting expertise.
  • Document and assess non-standard terms in advertiser insertion orders and other customer or vendor contracts.
  • Work alongside the Corporate Controller on projects related to challenges we will face as a growing, multi-national company.

About You:

You love rolling up your sleeves and diving into all activities associated with accounting, technical accounting and financial reporting. You are hardworking, detail-oriented and demonstrate both a strong sense of ownership and good business sense. You have a collaborative approach and are able to build effective relationships with colleagues in Accounting Operations, Tax, Legal, Finance & Strategy, Product Management, Business Development and Sales. You have strong organizational and communication skills and are able to prioritize, plan, perform and communicate activities and findings both in written and verbal form to individuals, management and auditors. You take initiative and enjoy working in a dynamic environment across all levels of management and across functions and geographies with minimal supervision. You are confident, energetic, demonstrate good judgment and are able to influence outcomes globally. 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 10 years experience in Accounting and Reporting, with a minimum of 5 years in public accounting, plus experience working at a multinational public company in an accounting management or technical accounting role preferred
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge of GAAP
  • Understanding of the social media, digital advertising or consumer internet industries
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Effective writing, presentation and informal communication skills
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, high-growth environment
  • A strong passion for Nextdoor’s mission
